1st Post....My Current Mash Recipe.
« on: May 06, 2011, 12:07:21 AM »

I've had Keith a month or so now and he is doing great. Ive been looking around the forum for a while and have noticed a few people putting there mash recipe up. Just thought i would put the one i am currently doing on to kick off my 1st post and get your feed back on the ingredients i've used.

I've started off by food processing a whole broccoli, 1 large chilli, 1 red pepper, small amount of parsley, 1 kiwi and 1 apple, wild rice and a steamed sweet potato.

on the side i am currently soaking black eyed peas, red green and yellow lentils, pearl barley, marrow fat peas and pinto beans. once these are soaked they will be boiled and then put into the mix.

Its the first mash i have made, Keith is currently on Harrisons high potency pellet in the morning then veggies at night. This mash mix will make it easier by freezing the mix into portion bags and giving Keith some each night.

Please feel free to let me know what you think.

Cheers.

Hi there and  :hiya to the forum (madhouse), That mash looks and sounds  :yummy:, as Mandi says most of us leave pellets in all of the time, but each to their own i guess. .
Would love to hear more about Keith and yes we love pics.

 :hiya to the forum!

Keith is one lucky bird! Your recipe sounds great  I am going to try it with Buku, as he has been pulling up his nose to chop so far.

As for the pellets - I have read in an Avian book that it is not essential to leave out pellets for a parrot all day, as birds forage for food in nature and don't have it readily available at all times. It also encourages your bird to eat veggies and other stuff, else they may just fill their tummies on the pellets. But as Tracy says, each to their own.  :pecking:

 i like the LOTR name for your birds :)

here is the finished mash, think he may like it.

I've split some of it up into small tubs, but am now wondering how many evening meals a tub will last. I'm unsure on how much they are suppose to eat. He is eating around 25g of Harrisons high potency in the morning and then this mash at night. Could anyone help on this one? here is a pic of the tubs the mash is in.

Cheers.

I suppose it's obvious I'm a Lord of The Rings fan

It's hard to tell how much you've put in the tubs, but it looks like loads, when I make up "mash" I put 2 heaped table spoons in freezer bags and every day I take out 1 bag and split it between Frodo and Bilbo, but I do give them both toast with Parrot Palm extract on in a morning, they both then have "mash" and fruit for lunch, they also have Pellets all day.

Hiya and welcome.
It sounds like a great recipe  I give about 2 tablespoons of food per meal. It's not much so I freeze it in plastic bags. One plastic bag lasts about 3 meals.

Hi , mash looks scrummy . We freeze ours in ice cube trays and then into bags once its solid so it doesnt get freezer burn .

Well done  :yahoo:

Who'd have thought keeping a grey would be so interesting ? We love it
