Amazon Parrot:food advice
« on: January 12, 2012, 03:42:01 PM »

Rehomed a 5 year  old female bluefronted amazon on Sunday.
Want to check a few things regarding diet!
Can they eat Sweetcorn that is tinned and not fresh?
Strawberries?
Beetroot from a jar? (worried about the vinegar)
Sprouts, cabbage, parsnips are they ok uncooked to be given to her??
Also where is best place to get a travel carrier as previous owners used box that she was sold to them in. She does not like it and thought with treats if i bought her a wire one i could coax her to get used to it using treats! some seem expensive so any ideas folks??

WTG for re homing

Yes to the sweetcorn, Strawberries, sprouts, Cabbage and Parsnips, just make sure you rinse everything well
The Beetroot from a jar is a no, but you can give fresh Beetroot.

You can get Travel Cages online, try the likes of Scarletts http://scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/default.aspx
Northern Parrots http://www.northernparrots.com/parrot-carriers-and-travel-cages-dept445_pg1/?gclid=cnir-kldyq0cfuupfaod106ghq

I'm sure others will be on and give you even more answers

Just be careful with the tinned sweet corn, as some contain salt

Karen I use it sometimes from a tin and always give it a good rinse/wash, but then again I rinse/wash everything before cooking for the Hobbits

I would think that even washing food that has been preserved in brine will not remove the excess salt, as it will be within the cells of the food itself.

Same as if we cooked carrots in salt water, and then washed the carrots, it wouldn't get rid of all the salt that they had been cooked in

I don't buy foods in brine as it fattening and I don't need help putting on the pounds, I can do that on my own
