AZ Pellets and Poop
« on: January 22, 2012, 10:25:49 PM »

Hi guys,

I have changed Dolly's diet from seed mix to Animal Zone fruit chunks, which she has happily taken to.

She has been eating them for about 4 days, but today I have noticed her poop is a brown colour.

Is this normal and what colour should her poop be if she is eating the fruit chunks?

When she was eating seed, her motion was green poop, white poop and clear urine.

Now it is brown/red/purple poop, white poop and clear urine.

Please help as it has spooked us into thinking that the change in colour could be blood or illness?

She is eating a lot too... most of the day she is back and forth from her bowl of AZ fruit pellets. She has drunk a little water and has been out of the cage for a good while.

Comments and advice welcome!

Thanks.

Ollies poop is reddish as well since he has been having AZ  Not so easy to clean up as it leaves a nasty stain.

So would the natural one or let's say the cereal/muesli be more of a sandy colour?

Sid only poops in three places, so I lay paper there. He never ever poops in his cage, except if I am late home to let him out.

To be honest, we are new house owners and our living room is cream coloured!

We, as I am sure most people would prefer a living room without poop stains all over it, but equally we are reaslistic and know that ultimately she is going to poop wherever and whenever she feels like it.

We bought 4 draught/draft excluders for the top of the curtain rails, so she won't fly up there now and our sofas are leather, which is easy to clean.

We have a carpet washer, which picks up stains/spills well and f10 in a spray bottle for anywhere else...

I guess it was just a bit harder getting red/purple/brown poop out of cream carpets/chairs and curtains than the "normal" colour...

As she has taken well to the pellets, we will probably try her on the natural or cereal kind next, so she gets the same nutrition, but we get a bit of an easier ride on the other side, if you know what I mean!

Elliot does she have a play stand ???
i find mine only poop whilst standing not flying
so its either from their cage, stand or sometimes on the sofa
but if you work out where she does it you can put paper or towels
prevention is better than cure
and i know you can get plastic carpet runners to protect your floor

Hi Elliot and welcome to the world of parrot ownership .I'm sorry to say that these are the kind of things that you need to put up with ,multi coloured walls , if its not poop its food , chewed furniture , ripped wall paper , buttons pulled out of your computer and mobile phone, the list goes on .But dont fret or get disheartened its a learning curve. We were all first time parronts once. All the best mate.

She only poops in her cage or as you say, when standing, never in flight.

So I guess you are right... if she has a favourite place to stand and poop, lay out some paper...

We were thinking of getting her a stand, so any tips for a reasonably priced one that is not too big, but big enough for her to stand, possibly feed and catch poop?!

Thanks!

Hi Elliot

Send Mandi a pm, and she will give you details of a chap that makes and sells very good Parrot stands.  Many people from the forum have bought them from him.
