Baby African Grey - Am I Doing It Right?
« on: May 11, 2011, 09:57:48 PM »

Can anyone help and put my mind at ease?
Just got a lovely African Grey from a breeder who said the baby is 10 weeks then said it was 12 weeks old.... bit vauge.  He stated the bird was weaned and just needed a sringe of formula mix food - give the parrot 5cc's of the mix, 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening, told me how to mix this.
Following this but the bird seems to be crying, well making squeaky low noises all the time and is now sitting on my shoulder carefully going to my mouth?  I know it is hard to give advice, but I was wondering if 2 5cc's of formula mix a day is enough?  The bird is trying to eat veg and fruit as I offer them and also drinking water alone.  But I am worried that the feed is not enough but don't want to over feed.  Reading on the forumn, I am getting even more worried as it states if the weaning isn't correct can harm the bird. Any advice please?

It sounds as though he is hungry. Are you feeding any seeds or pellets? If he is weaned the breeder should have told you what mix he was weaned onto. 5cc really doesn't sound much at all. are you weighing him and checking that he isn't losing any weight?

:ty Thanks Liz for the speedy reply, I am a little worried (but I am know to worry!)

Just weighed the parrot - Who we named Roscoe.  He is 500g.
The breeder gave me a small bag of mixed parrot seeds and said to give this to him. In the bottom of his cage.
He picks at fruit and eats 2 grapes a day. He nibbles at the seed.  Especially at 9:00pm
I have read about the pellets and am going to Jollies - our pet store tomorrow to get some.
He just squeeks unless he sits on me and sleeps in the evening.

Does this sound all Ok?    BTW ..... Had Roscoe a week.

I have no experience of hand rearing chicks, so if you ask Paula who owns this site and breeds parrots and hand rears them. Send her a "private message".

Hi Wendy, sounds like the breeder gave you the little guy to early a parrot should be fully weaned before they leave the breeder and then the new owner can give a bit of formula each night if they want to but it should only be for the purpose of bonding.
Getting in touch with Paula will be the best thing you can do she will give you all the advice you will need.
Good luck for the future
