Basil won't take to Animalzone
« on: January 13, 2012, 09:43:12 PM »

Hi All

Me again, ok so i got Basil some Animalzone Plumage Enhancer but he won't eat it  because he loves his Pretty Bird food to much, the new food has been in all day and he hasn't touched it, in the end I've had to put some of the pretty bird in so he eats, any suggestion how i can get him onto the Animalzone.

It's true what Mandi says

I'm not convinced my birds are eating it. I give them animalzone fruity for something different as there main diet is ZuPreem Natural or Harrisons, but there seems to be a lot of waste from the Animalzone, but I can add it to foods like parrot mash or a fruit mix, so at least it will crumble onto the foods so they get some of it

when I gave my two Animalzone, I put it in their dishes and there it stayed, they didn't eat it the first day, the kind of picked at it the second day and the third day they ate it all up.  I continued to give them the Enhancer for a few more days and then gave them some museli to give them a bit of a change, now they eat it all.

I did same as Pat when I converted Poppy to pellets. She had been used to seed for 8 years and to be honest it was easy, she won't eat seed now and throws them away if I try to give her any.

Charlie was a seed junkie when I got him and we battled for 2 months but now he is on zupreem. I went thru harrison and a couple of others. I gave up sometimes and won some days and slowly slowly. There are birds on this forum who took to it easy, some who put up some fight and some who never been converted. You will always find someone who been there done that so shout out if you need more tips, hint or help:)eli xx

Woohoo, nice one.  Don't give him the choice, just put AZ in his bowl, he'll have to eat it then.

Any bird can have it.  It's a complete meal, the same as the museli is a complete meal, but I mix the two together if I find they are just picking bits of the museli out, like Penny picks out the bits of corn and leaves the rest, I put them back on just enhancer for a few days.

Hi. Dexter, now 28 wks, has dived right into AZ straight away. I have to admit I mix it for him; muesli, plumage & fruit sticks, and he scoffs it - he seems to prefer the pellets to the other bits of corn etc. He also likes the Hagen Tropican (smells like bubblegum) especially the big chunks so he has that mixed in as well. He has warm veggies at breakfast time and a little fruit in the evening. Do you experienced guys (sorry & girls) out there think this is ok??? I'm still very new to this and want to give Dex the best. Thanks in advance. Oh, and he has an almond first thing when he wakes up. 😚

Hi Lesley

That sounds fine, except, I would limit the fruit to maybe 2-3 times a week

Thanks Tezza
Being a bot of a softy isn't always such a good idea methinks!! I find it hard not to spoil him but I understand there may be too much sugar in the fruit?? I'll limit it from now on x

you are more than welcome

I think we all spoil our parrots something rotten if I'm being honest.

But yes, the fruit sugar isn't too good for them if given too often, and can cause problems with their digestion. A couple of times a week is fine tho.

The almond in a  morning is a nice treat too

I feed mine on the animal zone pellets, mix fruit chunks and the enhancer together in the bowl, and have that available all the time.  I also give them daily veggies, raw one day, and steamed the next.  They also get my home made mash a few times a week too.

One day a week, I have recently given them tidy mix as a treat instead of their pellets too - another member does this, and I think its a great idea.

Also, another recent idea was to put all of the pellet bits that they leave in their bowls into a mixing bowl, blitz some bananas, maybe some blueberries and a couple of eggs, and combine all together - bake in the oven till cooked (180 degrees).  Let it cool and then cut up - this is a lovely treat for them too

Also, you can get a recipe book (£9.50) from here, that contains lots of great parrot recipes put together by The pikers from here - all proceeds go to the rescue fund

Anyway - you sound like you are doing  great job - so, keep it up, and if you want to know anything else, just shout out
