Best Food/Supplier
« on: October 12, 2011, 01:39:06 PM »

Hi All,

There are a lot of different opinions and recommendations regarding the best diet, foods and suppliers.

When I collected Sophie the shop gave me 2 different food mixes - I can't remember what they are off the top of my head but I can check later.

Is the a recommended supplier that a lot of people use here? Also, what mixes do you leave in the cage during the day?

Cheers

Jase

I have used both Scarletts and VetUK to buy my pellets. VetUK are doing free postage on orders over £19 at present. I leave pellets in all day as well and in the evening give some mash and/or fruit.

I use Harrison's and leave in the cage all day.  I tend to search about on the internet for who is cheapest at the time x  I've used Scarletts, Northern Parrot and Chemist Direct x

Thanks for the info!

I've just ordered some High Potency - Coarse from VetUk to get me started.

How much should be given during the day? I usually give her some vegetables for breakfast and something for dinner, mash and sweetcorn has gone down well a couple of times!

I'll give her fruit every other day usually, sometimes daily in small quantities. Also, I'll giver her a couple of different nuts now and again.

I'm also about to grab some tidy mix that I can put in toys for her to hunt around for is she wants to.

Does this seem like a healthy/ideal diet?

That sounds good  the only thing you could add is some cooked or sprouted beans and pulses.

Maybe I'm not understanding properly, you can put me right though!

Her current daily diet is:

Veg in the morning
Mash or sweetcorn in evening (you mean mashed potato or a parrot mash with lots of different things?)
A little fruit and the occasional nut

If this is all she is getting it doesn't seem like a lot to me. She definitely will be needing pulses/sprouts etc or pellets so its good you ordered some pellets

You can't overfeed them on pellets, I think most people leave pellets in the cage at all times - how many they will eat depends on how much other stuff they are getting really. Flint eats about a dessertspoonful a day plus some that I add to his evening meal
Tidy mix is a good quality seed for her to forage for

I normally leave pellets in all day but give toast in the morning and veg or fruit in the evening. Tonight he will get two or three spoonfulls of rice because that is what we are having and if I am preparing veg or apples he gets a slice of that as well.

She has access to a seed mix at all times at the moment, it just isn't the best quality, I was given it when i got her last week - hence the purchase of some tidymix.

The plan will be to move away from seeds to pellets then use the Tidymix for foraging - I hope it's as easy as that!

I'm going to have a look at some beans and pulses tonight when I'm shopping

Thanks for the advice once again! :o)

We now have a set regime with our bird,i guess we are lucky in a sense he converted to pellets within 5 days and will eat anything thats put to him.

His diet is varied and as we are feeding him on 4 days pellets 2 day seeds without peanuts and sunflower seeds, and 1 day its totally veg/fruit and once every 2 months he gets a hard boiled egg complete with shell, our feeding program seems to work for us we rotate the food so no 2 weeks are the same days except fruit/veg always follows the seed day as we was advised that feeding fruit/veg and pellets don't mix in a feeding program.

The above program was started over a month ago and so far so good.
