Boiled Eggs
« on: October 06, 2011, 10:48:19 AM »

Hi,

I've only just joined this site. I have a a male African Grey and have had him since 1996. He has always been a fussy eater, and will chose what fruits and veg he will have on different days of the week. I have recently learnt that it is good to feed your parrot a boiled egg once a week, with the shell on. I've been trying to get Charlie, my parrot, to eat one for a few days now, but he is just not interested. Any tips or advice on getting him to try new foods?

Thanks

Shane

scrambled egg WITH shell for him and just plain for me

gave charlie his food and sat down to eat mine... CRUNCH CRUNCH!!!
it was SHELL in mine...
realized i had mixed the scambled eggs up and i was eating charlies and he was eating mine.
i think there will be a long time till i eat scrambled eggs again....

I don't think there is any requirement to feed them egg, although I don't think having a little would harm them.

One a week sounds like a lot.

Maybe if you can tell us what he eats in an average day we can help with suggestions about what food to try and how best to convert him to new things

  scrambled egg with shells in can't be nice!!

My two love scrambled egg.  I usually scamble one egg with nothing at all added and then share it between them with a little bit of toast which is spread with the palm oil.

There is calcium in egg shell, but it's not necessary to give them the shell if they are on pellets.  If you do give them the shell, it should be cooked.

What sort of thing does Charlie eat?

Anything I eat Nico wants so all I have to do is eat something in front of her. Make sure that you tempt with new foods when they are likely to be hungry. If they have filled up on other stuff they won't be so tempted to try new bits.

I feel I'm going to have to see if Flint likes egg!

Is it not a bit odd to feed a bird an egg? Like eating a baby  :puke

I give my Hobbits hard boiled egg once a month.
I boil the egg for about 40-45 minutes if I'm giving them the shell too, once cool I peel the shell from the egg and crumble it in to a bowl, I then use a fork to mash the egg up and mix it in with the shell, once that is done I add a little Palm Fruit Extract and give it a good mix, I then get a slice a wholemeal seeded bread and toast it (I use the tiny loafs for the Hobbits)
While waiting for the toast to pop, I split the egg mix in to two bowls.
I then cut the toast in half and crumble a 1/4 of a slice each in to the bowls, give it another mix round with the fork and pop the bowls in to the cages, it goes down a treat and the Hobbits love it

boiled eggs - these 3 love them. I used to have to crack the shell a bit to get them started but now they do it themselves.  I've had two vets now both say that a boiled egg every so often is good for them as is a small piece of cheese once a week x
