Don't Starve A Parrot to Convert ???
« on: October 13, 2011, 11:40:31 PM »

I've been doing quite a bit of reading up on converting to pellets tonight........  I found the article below really interesting.  I know someone people say that if you just left the pellets in eventually the bird would eat them and would not starve itself.  For anyone thinking of doing this have a read........ make your own mind up but this makes sense to me

That is a great article!

Karen why did it put you off trying again with Pablo?

I definitely leave Flint to many options for food, I think in the evenings now I'll make sure there are no foraging seeds or nuts in his cage at all - he is always looking for them instead of eating his veg/pellets!

So tough but not cruel!

Karen I know exactly what you mean.......  and it is definitely anything other than easy.  Have you had a try with hiding it in his other food? x

if he was a child i would call him a spoilt little brat   but i love him too bits and he seems to know that after hours of tweet tweet tweeting on his seed bowl i will give in . Which i do,

gave them on there own
mixed with juice
with honey
mixed in with veg
in with toys
even gave them to him out my mouth which i know i shouldnt do that ,but thought he might take them like that but no nothing works. The only way he will eat them is if they are in birdie bread.
Have ground them up into powder and put them on his carrots as he is carrot daft ,but he wouldnt eat his carrots. have tried plain ones ,tiny ones and coloured ones but they are all a  :nono:

How long are you trying him for Karen?

This is what happened to me.  Charlie was eating Harrison Fine, Penny eating Coarse, so I couldn't afford to feed them both Harrisons, so I changed them to Hagen Tropican....Charlie threw them Penny ignored them, I bought the Hagen Tropican sticks......Charlie ate them, Penny went on to Harrisons Fine.......I think I'm better off, not sure     Anyway, the way I did it was to give them their toast and palm extract in the morning, followed by their chop.  As well as that, there is a bowl of pellets.  Now, I've been through Charlie throwing the pellets, dropping them one by one on the floor to taking the whole bowl out and throwing it!  If he does that he doesn't get any more.  In the evening he gets more pellets put in his bowl, while in his other bowl he will get a bit of veg and a bit of fruit.  It's up to him if he eats the pellets or not, but he doesn't get anything else.  That's it........now the longest he has held out for without eating pellets is two days, of course he had veg, chop, fruit as well......just no pellets.  Then he started eating them, so now Charlie is on Hagen Tropican Sticks and eating loads.  Penny is still on Harrisons Fine, but that's ok I can cope with that.  I do however, mix a few Tropican Sticks in with her Harrisons as well hoping that she will eat them, but I'm not too fussed, at least she is getting the goodness out of Harrisons.

When I had my kids, their meals were put in front of them, if they didn't want it......they left it, but I wasn't going to go cooking anything else for them.  I was the original Supernanny!

I went for it today
Oscar had his breakfast (palm fruit on toast ) which he chucked.
Then I emptied yesterdays seed and put hagens tropic an and hagens sticks in. He looked down his nose at it. I let them out for a couple of hours and when he went back in he tucked in quite happily for 5 mins, then left them.
Because he didn't eat much and threw the toast I've swapped it now for his seed, but at least I know he will eat it, try again tomorrow

Here's where I think I must have the most well behaved birdie ever! Ruth eats & tries pretty much everything we give her.

The only thing she refuses is cooked sweet potato! One look & she's growling!

Mind you she does have enzymes added her main dish (different every day) every day. Wonder if those make her more hungry?

She still has one day of seed (mixed seed, crushed pea & corn, peppers, dried fruit, garlic sticks) during the week. But she eats that in the same way as the fresh stuff (fruit & veg) - has some then has pellets (in a separate bowl).

As for my kids! They get what they're given & if they don't like it they must try a mouthful each time. I'm the only fussy eater in the house! Greens, yuck!

Sorry for not replying sooner but having problems with computer.  Ha ha ha doing my head in . I tried pablo with his mash in the morning , he eats it ok but if I put ground pellets in he know and won't eat it .  I have tried pellets only in the seed bowl and he squeaks on top of the bowl for hours until I give in .he will eat the veg but then he want s seeds and of course there was pellets instead so he won't eat them. Believe me I have tried everything ,.little horror.  Once I left the pellets in all day and he had veg ,about 4 times that day as it goes off quick with the heat, but he had eaten some veg but just wanted the seeds. Now he only eats mainly the sunflower and leaves everything else. But he picks it up with his feet. I have moved the perch as polo said but he stands on the bowl and squeaks squeaks squeaks for ages till I give in and give him what he wants.I know he is spoiled but now I have made my bed so to speak.. When in say he eats mainly sunflower seeds I mean out of the seed bowl, he gets pats birdie bread recipe which he likes and sprouts which he likes . Really it's onlymthe pellets that's a no no . Hubby going to Uk for a week so I was going to try and not give in ,but after reading the post that was put up ,then I thought omg , can't do that .he is really healthy , talks loads doesn't pluck and generally a happy bird. Gets 12 hours sleep in another room has more toys than I have room for , has an aviary ,a cage for if we have to go out and a cage for bedtime. So maybe I'm wondering if he isn't going to eat them maybe just have to get a vitamin supplement then we will all be happy. Sorry for going on and on but I know how much people go on about a pellet diet ,but this is one bird that just won't eat them. but still going to try when hubby is away next week and not give him seeds just pellets. But will also give veg and sprouts but just not seeds. will just have to ignore his squawking . Hubby always says give him some seeds he is hungry, but he is not hungry as there is veg there .
