all if not most of these recipes were created by Julie & Stevie (piker) with help from their feathered friends. I've tried a few but all of them yet - enjoy making these for your birdies    :parrot:

VEGGIE CRISPS

thinly slice your veg. with a potato peeler - carrot, parsnips, beetroot. any root vegetable would be good
spray with a little olive oil and bake in the oven at 100c or gas mark 1/2 for 1 1/4 hours until crispy.

you can also add a little honey before you bake as an occasional treat

SWEET POTATO MASH BALLS[/u

1 large sweet potato
parsley
oatmeal flakes
quinoa
2 carrots
1 tbs millet
1 tbs hemp

METHOD

peel carrots and potatoes, boil them in a pan. take about 1 cup of quinoa and add it to a pan of boiling water, then cover and simmer for about 15 mins.
you'll know when it's done as it will look light and fluffy.

mash the sweet potato & carrots then start adding the quinoa, mixing it in. add the millet, hemp and a good pinch of parsley, mix well.

once everything is mixed in and cool, take a small amount and roll into balls, set them aside on a plate.

take your oats and pour them into a bowl and then roll your mash balls into them to help them stick. once done either serve fresh or freeze.

BIRDIE ICE POPS

make a cup of fruit herbal tea and cool
pour into an ice cube tray and add a piece of fruit
cut a lollipop stick or spatula in half and push into the fruit, put it in the freezer.

when completely frozen, let them stand for a few minutes before giving them to your bird.

these are delicious for us humans as well!

there's a few more yet, hope you like them

FRUIT LOAF

550g of wholemeal bread flour
350ml of warm water or herbal tea
bird safe fruits of your choice i.e. 1 banana, 1 cup sultanas and 1 cup of chopped dates

METHOD

place flour fruits and water into a mixer (if you have one) and give it a good blitz, check to make sure it's a dough consistency, if too dry add a small amount of water, if too wet add more flour. take out of mixer and let the dough rest for a few minutes, then knead for around 5 mins on a lightly floured clean board.
place in a silicon bread tin.
cover with a clean damp cloth or cling film and leave to rise in a warm place for about 30 mins.
uncover and bake in a pre heated oven at 220c/gas mark 8 for 30 - 35 mins.

this can be eaten by humans too and can be frozen.

APPLE SURPRISE

4 small apples
2 tbs of wheat germ
2 tbs of raisins or sultanas
1/4 tsp of cinnamon
1/4 cup of chopped pine nuts, walnuts, almonds etc.
1 cup of apple juice concentrate

METHOD

wash and core the apples, making sure all pips are removed.
put apples in a non Teflon baking dish and lightly spray with a non stick coating.
combine wheat germ, raisins, cinnamon & nuts with a little apple juice (enough to bind) fill the centre of the apples with this mixture, packing it in tightly (this part is messy ) drizzle the remaining juice over the apples.
bake in the oven for about 45 mins at 180c/ gas mark 4.
once cooled cut in half and pop in your birdies bowl, and watch your birds go mad for it, they'll love it.

this recipe cannot be frozen and must be kept in an air tight container in the fridge.

BIRDY BREAD

pre heat oven to 180c

quarter of a bag of harrisons (other plain pellets might be ok)
orange juice
dried fruit
banana
baking powder
1 slice of extra nutty seeded bread
almonds, pecans, walnuts etc.
very small amount of tidymix seed (optional)
1 egg plus the yolks from making the spoons (if you don't have the yolks left then use two eggs)

smash the harrisons so it is very fine in a blender or with a rolling pin
add 1 handful of dried fruit and banana
add 1tsp baking powder
add a few almonds. pecans and walnuts and a very small amount of tidymix seed. crumble bread and add to the blender, add eggs and mix well.
add small amount of orange juice throughout the mixing until the mixture is of a dough like consistency.
spread the mixture in a flan dish and cook in the oven for 30 - 40 mins or until the mixture is cooked (put a knife in the middle of the mixture and if it is still wet when you removed it, it's not cooked, so leave it a little longer)

phewwww!!! last one for now

PINECONE TREATS

pinecones, bird seeds, nuts, natural pure honey, palm fruit extract, organic smooth peanut butter, (pellets crushed, dried fruits, all optional)
natural sisal

do not take pinecones off the ground. choose cones from the trees that have never been treated with pesticides or other chemicals and pick cones that are intact with no signs of rotting.

put the pinecones in a dish and pour boiling water over them. let them steep for about 15 mins. this will help to destroy any bacteria or insects that are present . the cones may open up like flower buds in the water but they will close again during the drying process. drain off water and bake in a 250c oven for 30 mins.

tie the sisal around the very tip/top of the pinecone. leave a little bit to tie on the top of the birds cage. roll the pinecone in a mix of palm fruit extract and a little peanut butter making sure to cover most of it. use a plastic knife to get in between the gaps. you can add some of your birds favourite chopped nuts, push them in the gaps. when you are done with that, roll the covered pinecone in the mix of bird seeds, pellet and dried fruit. drizzle a little honey over the covered pinecone and then re roll it in the mix of seeds etc. tie the twine of rope on to the top of your birds cage.

Yummy yummy yummy!!!
My Titch had home made butternut squash soup today. She also has sweet potato with carrot mashed. Rice with veggies. And organic Dorset cereal with nuts which she hates. She will not eat any kind of nuts. I may cook my own veggie crisps for her. She is a very fussy eater, and has a sweet beak! Great recipes and will try some out. Thanks for that.
