Fussy With Fruit And Veg
« on: November 09, 2011, 07:33:43 PM »

I am a new owner and Alfie is just a few months old. I was worried that she wasnīt eating enough fuit and veg and have changed to a complete mix. She was weaned on a cheap feed that was basically sunflower and peanuts. There were dried fruits in the cheap mix but she didnīt eat them. She has now started to. I do also give her extras each day and am happy that she enjoys pomegranite. She wont eat the pellets in the mix though and probably like all new owners, worry she is not getting enough of a balanced diet. She loves raisins. (how many is too much) not crazy about monkey nuts which I know is not a problem. I am not neurotic but sometimes it feels that way. I just want the best for her. Also, how do I know if she is getting enough food. She seems to eat loads three times a day and there is always a little left so I guess she gets enough. She eats for ages in the morning, mid afternoon, after playtime, and last thing at night before she goes to sleep. Sorry but never had an African Grey before and read up loads before we got her, plus fed her at the weaning stage and saw her every day before she came home. Cats, dogs, Gourdian finch, tropical fish, zebra finches, tortoise, no problem. She is lovely and so funny and loving. Loads of energy as well.

So sorry again, a bit long winded but wasnīt this bad when I had the kids.

Hiya, tel us more about what you feed him
do you give him any veg or fruit other than whats inc in the seed mix ?
have you thought about a complete pellet mix as the base of his diet ?
it doesnt need to be expensive and that way you know they getting the correct balance of nutrients

i would persevere with the pellets and try a few brands before giving up totally. when we had jasper he was weaned onto a parrot mix and would appear to eat lots of it to the point of his crop bulging, like he was pigging out on it,and for a long time after he would go crazy if he saw a bag with sunflowers in it. i think this is why alfie appears to eat loads of his mix  :)

offer cooked and mashed sweet potatoes, with cooked veggies. or try mashing them all together. another day offer them raw,but dont give up.

welcome to you and alfie

Yeah if you could tell us what the complete mix is.
Not many Parrots will eat pellets mixed in with the seed and other things...they will eat all the other items first.
An  odd raisin a day will be fine, they are basically dried grapes with just the same sugar content but obviously very little water.

We all worry our birds aren't getting enough of everything  Have you checked out the diet section for suggestions of how and what to feed?

no need to say sorry - I'm sure they are questions we have all asked before.  Look forward to hearing more about how you are getting on - I presume Alfie is only a baby x

Sid used to be on a diet of sun flower seeds and peanuts and he used to pluck his feathers. I read all the diet information on here and converted him to a pellet diet. I mixed ground pellets in with a veg mash and he loved it. Also, others have mixed the pellets with a small amount of fresh orange juice. He now only eats pellets, has a peanut as a treat once in a blue moon and fresh veg, cooked or raw and or fruit every night, he also has seeded toast and palm oil for breakfast and loves it. Persevere and  you will be pleased that you did so.

Thank you for your replies. The complete food does include a lot of dried fruit. Each bowl full seems to be different so it appears there is a good variety. The pellets are in the mix so will try taking them out and soaking them or mixing with mashed cooked veg. Have tried fresh and cooked veg, carrots, pear, plum, cucumber, nectarines, peas, cooked beans, apricots, dates, figs, corn and loads more. She does like the corn but little else.
