Harrisons V Tidymix
« on: September 29, 2011, 01:25:06 PM »

At the Island Parrot Stall at a pet show in Edinburgh, I was advised that although Harrisons is a perfectly good diet Tidymix was even better, on ordering tidymix i looked at the ingredients and noticed that Sunflower is the 2nd most used ingredient,  I would like to know other members opinion on this matter as i only want to give my Grey the best.
For those who have never heard The Island Parrot Sactuary is a charity based sanctuary near Oban and does a lot of good work with parrots when their owners are unable to care for them.

Tidymix is a good quality seed mix.  Having said that birds pick out the bits that they like and not necessarily the bits that are good for them, so there can be a lot of waste.  With Harrisons, you don't need to give supplements, everything your bird needs is in the pellet and apart from when they have a fit and throw their food everywhere, there's no waste.  Obviously they still need veggies and fruit no matter what diet you choose for your bird.

I agree with Pat and I use both with the hobbits, they have Pellets, veg etc in the day and in the evening I give them a small amount of Tidymix, win, win situation, they get the best of both

Never tried tidymix but seen it at my corn merchants, harrisons is organic which i use some use the tidymix and can advise you more than i could but i think they use it because their birds will not eat pellets and it seems to be a second choice for them, my son did use it for his breeding pairs but gave it up "never asked why" i am a pellet/seed/fruit and veg feeder to my bird but i get it mixed for me at the corn merchants it never see's a peanut or sunflower seed and to be honest if i saw any of the latter in a seed mix i would think twice about ordering it. Well had my say, but you can make your own decission.

I give both as well

Only a small amount of seed and nut so he is mainly eating pellets, power treats and veg.

Im converted to Harrisons now thanks to Liz.  With seed they spit out all the bits they dont want and wait for a refill.  My tilly used to just eat the sunflowers (and that was a low sunflower mix!).
It took her a few days to even try a pellet but now she lives them and no mess at bottom of cage from seed mix.  I am going to use the seed mix for foraging (inside egg boxes etc for when im out the house).

I am wanting to try her on  Tidymix Pulse & Rice soaking mix as I have never made this for her if anyone wants to perhaps send a wee wee portion my way

Thanks to all who replied it was appreciated, it is good to know that there are like minded people you can turn to for advice. My conclusion is that I am going to keep Harrisons as Scooby's base diet along with fruit and veg and occasionally give him Tidymix.

Bingo is on Harrisons along with all his fruit and veg. He will not touch anything else with nuts or seeds. My sister took on a parrot and that was just eating seeds but after giving her some Harrisons to try on the parrot he loves it again along with fruit and veg. He is coming to stay next fri for a week so i will see.

Its a really touching story  & well worth reading & viewing for those that havent seen it. It will touch their hearts

I feed tidymix, and find i get little waste, i don't feed mine pellets as they don't like them, so i do have to give supplements. They get all they need and like what they eat

Just received my order from Scarletts this morning of Harrisions high potency course, which i ordered yesterday after reading this topic on Sunday night.
This will be the first time Tulah has tried them, she will eat most of her seed but the sunflower seeds are the first to go plus she gets fruit and veg.
Can anyone give me some guidance of moving her off seeds to pellet's, what would be the best way forward. :ty

I would give seed first thing, just a tiny bit, then remove and leave just pellets in during the day. You can moisten them with a small amount of oj if she is reluctant to try them. Good luck

Ive done what was suggested and gave her a bit of seed mix this morning and as I left for work emptied out the seed and put some Harrison's with some oj over them, just got home now and it looks like she has just emptied her bowl as there are pellets on the cage floor.
Now I have put some more in without oj, and she has taken a look and not even touched them, please can someone tell me the next step, I'm thinking of leaving the pellets in there and starting the process again with a little seed in the morning and change over to pellets before I go to work, do you all think that is the way forward, she will be having her veg and fruit tonight as normal so she won't starve. :)

Keep leaving the pellets in during the day it can take a while. The most important thing is not to give up, if she thinks you'll give in a give her more seed there's no way she'll eat the pellets. It can take a few weeks. Good luck
