How Much Pellets?
« on: June 15, 2011, 08:06:27 AM »

If i were to change all my fids over to pellets how big a bag would you think id need to buy each month? Im pretty sure because all of my birds are really good at trying new things that they would take to it really well and since Echo has decided to start regurgitating for me and he eats tidy mix which = really bad garlic breath!!! ive decided to put them onto pellets, most likely Harrisons (unless you can suggest one thats better than this?) im just trying to work out how much roughly its going to cost me each month for the 4 birds i have (3 large ammies and 1 Timneh)

They come in 2 sizes, and the 5 pound bags cost roughly £28-30 inc postage depending on where you order them from, it will probably be trial and error to see how much they would eat and how long they will last.  maybe 1 bag per month

Thanks thats not too bad price, would i be right in thinking it would be better to buy it on a monthly basis (freshness?)and not buying the bigger 25lbs bags that would last a lot longer? Which pellets are the best nutritionally?

I buy different Pellets makes and feed them that, I buy every couple of months, I feed mine
Harrisons High Potency Fine, Zupreem Natural, Hagen Tropican, also not a pellet Hagen Tropimix, and add in TOPS from Irina, That is the dry food they have.

Im not too sure, ive only got 1 bird eating them at the moment, didnt know they did the huge bags, apparently someone on here said you can freeze them? so that would sort that problem out. No more stale pellets   maybe you could re-package them into daily amounts and only take out the amount you need      Anyway im still a beginner on all this, maybe one of the more experienced members could help you a bit more than me

Harrisons are the best nutritionally but as Geff says you can mix and match (everything else is quite a lot cheaper too so that can even it out if you're running low if for no other reason).

£26 from Vet UK for a big bag. If you keep it in the fridge it stays fresh for a while. A big bag lasts me a month for my one.

I would give the veggies etc in the morning for brekkie, and  then leave pellets in the bowl through the day if your  not there to give lunch, and then dinner in the eve, and some fruit for a treat

Ok so they can still eat quite a mix of other things on top of the pellets then and it wont affect the nutritional wotsit of the pellets. Hope they take to it!!

They still need all the other stuff as well as pellets. The pellets are just instead of the seed.
