Manuka Honey
« on: May 20, 2011, 05:12:55 PM »

When Digby just got ill I splashed out and got him a jar of Manuka honey UMF 15+, at first I just added it to tea thinking he wouldn't like it on its own but I tried adding a drop (a tiny bit on the tip of a knife) on his piece of birdie bread and he loved it! Now I use it to mask his liver medicine or probiotic (though this might not be a good idea considering manuka honey is antibacterial). He really loves it  :yummy: :yummy:

My birds love it! Bloody expensive I know but so many people praise it's benefits that I buy a jar every month and they have it on wholemeal toast!

I think heat destroys a lot of nutrients found in honey though

I am not actually 100% sure, but I know that cooked honey is even considered harmful according to ayurveda, but raw honey is highly regarded

Ollie has Manuka honey on a plain rice biscuit every night, and I put his bro biotics etc... on it.
He licks off all the honey, then slings the biscuit.
I hate the taste of honey YUK.

Some supermarkets sell it as well as health food shops. Not bought it online but have a look there too.

It needs to be at least 15+ strength though, the lower strengths don't have the same benefits

Angie, its from New Zealand, and is said to help skin conditions, and possibly internal organs .

It really is great stuff. I've seen district nurses using it under patient's dressings.

Angie, you should only give a tiny amount of honey. (on the tip of the knife, size of a small pea) After all it's pretty much pure sugar and sugar promotes yeast growth in the gut.

Liz, it is an ayurvedic view on honey and I think that has got to do with energy as much as the actual food values, if not more. I suppose because honey is pure sugar, once all the good stuff destroyed that is all is left - sugar. It's not actually harmful harmful as it can kill or something

It's definitely great for skin conditions if applied externally, but I've also read that it helps with all sorts of things internally, like stomach ulcers, ibs and even crohn's disease so i thought it would be good for Digby's if he had some bacteria there which wasn't supposed to be there (still don't know what it was)

There are actually dressings you can have prescribed off the nurse or doctor and they contain honey .
If you suffer with hayfever , a teaspoon a day of locally sourced honey will do wonders for you .
It tastes vile , yuk . I can just about stick it in a Locket when I've got a cold (you know , the sweets you suck?)

Morrisons do 10+ and 5+ , not really good enough it has to be 15+ to get the benefit of the anti bacterial , like Irina said .
