Mash Disaster
« on: May 07, 2011, 03:00:09 PM »

having a bad day,was making mash for Pablo ,well cooked the beans, lentils in the pressure cooker for 10 minutes and it was too long and they are a bit mushy . then started cutting up apple, pear sweet potato, swede, broccoli, and other stuff using my nicer dicer so that they would all be the same size, when it came to the carrots they were too hard and they broke my favorite gadget. then to top it all off when I took it out to Pablo ,who by the way was shouting I want a bit,he turned his beak up at it and had the cheek to say "what's that"  I even ground up his pellets and put them in as he won't hardly eat them. will it be ok I'm sending a picture as it doesn't look as good as everyone elses.

it looks very nice! But you might want to use a food processor and chop vegetables a lot more fine, sunflower seed size pieces. I use all the veg raw this way. Also, it's probably best to cook beans in a regular pot on a fast boil, fewer chances of over-cooking them that way but you will still cook them for long enough to destroy whatever needs destroying  Sorry about your device though! that must have been one hard carrot!

OH no , just bagged up 32 bags of mash and went to put them in the freezer and i think my freezer is not working, chicken that i put in last night is not properly frozen.
I have a mini blender thing but its either mush or not chopped right can you recommend a food processor for me .

if you cut such hard veg in their raw state, like carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, etc. then they don't turn into mush but are just chopped in tiny bits. And I always do it on "pulse" and pulse it just a few times, it's easier to control the size of the pieces that way. If some softer veggies are then like mush it's not a big deal when they are mixed with other harder bits, like beans and chopped hard veg. In fact, the mushier the consistency the better if your parrot eats it that way of course, because you can add anything in a mushy mass and he will be non the wiser, plus it ensures he will eat all the bits rather than picking.

I just have a regular ancient Russell Hobbs food processor similar to this one http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4200442/Trail/searchtext%3EFOOD+PROCESSOR.htm

I like the look of your mash
When I first made mash for Frodo he would not touch it, it took a few go's with him, but Bilbo's another story.... If it's edible then Bilbo wants it

Travelled 40 kilometers and 40 back to buy a gino a campo food processor to make a better job of the mash, cost 70 euros and looked the buisiness, then went and got stuff from a health food shop. Couldnt wait to get back and use the processor to make a new load of stuff for pablo and see if it would be better. Well cooked the quinoa and the millet and some other stuff i got ,peeled the carrots and swede and stuck them in the thingy and guess what it wont work so hubby is away back again to take it back. Trust me i should have bought the cheaper one . :grumble:
