Nettle Picking.......Ouch
« on: May 02, 2011, 06:50:35 PM »

We've been picking nettles today and making a brew with them for Teddy . I gave them a good wash , put them in a glass jug and bruised them with a wooden spoon and then poured boiling water over them . Left them to sit in water til its gone cool and then strain .
Left overs are being frozen to be used as and when .

All thats left to do is to try it on our 'guinea pig'........Teddy come here .

Success , Teddy likes his nettle tea . Doesnt smell too nice but if he likes it and its good for him , I'll make it while I can (while the nettles are young)

:yahoo: that is great. I've been giving Digby chamomile with manuka honey after his stressful vet days, but have a box of nettle and fennel tea in the cupboard, will try him with that tomorrow. But I agree, it smells yucky

Flint won't eat fresh dandelion so I made 'tea' with some leaves yesterday and added it to his mash in the evening.

It didn't smell very nice but he scoffed his dinner so hopefully its one way of getting their goodness into him!

Can't post a link coz I'm on the phone but irina said in digbys thread that they shouldn't have too many. There is something in them that shouldn't be eaten in large quantities. I'll try and find the post later and put up a link

It was the post in parrot talk where irina told us that digby was ill. Geoff mentioned dandelion for liver problems and irina replied.

Off to have a look now

Dandelions are also known as "pee-pee en lit" , "wet the bed" and" tooth of lion".
Diuretic- I would think with liver and kidney problems should be used under vet advice ?

I don't think you can overdose on fresh dandelions much, the caution should be taken with extracts and dried stuff,  and i would have thought with the root, when there is liver disease of course (or, as you say Donna, have a chat with a vet), but a couple of leaves here and there won't do any harm, dandelion is a very safe herb.    I am giving a few sips of dandelion tea to Digby once in a few days now.
what I meant in my other post is that for Digby right now dandelion won't be of much help and if he was seriously ill I was risking to give him dehydration, but he really seems fine in himself, hence a bit of tea is good for him, I believe.

all parts of the dandelion are ok even the roots, as for nettles i think that you have to put them in boiling water and good rinse, im sure irina will confirm this

yeah, flowers, roots and leaves are all fine for dandelions.
As for nettles - the stinging kind  As Claire said you would need to either pour boiling water over it, or chop it very finely, or freeze it, or dry it to get rid of the sting.
