New Baby... what and when and how to feed?
« on: January 06, 2012, 09:04:18 PM »

I have just brought my first baby  :dummy  home.  Lucy is 10 weeks old.  She is eating something that looks like crushed corn that I am suppose to soak a little  luke warm water in with, and this is all she's eating... Can someone please tell me what is the best to feed her at this stage, when should I introduce veggies and fruits, and what about pellets and seeds?  I have read that seeds is a no-no...  please help!

Hi there
Someone with more experience will be along soon,  10 weeks is very young so you need to make sure you get good advise
Usually a breeder keeps the bird until it is fully weaned, to make sure it is eating properly before it goes
Hang on there and someone will be along x

Hi Zandra

Welcome to the forum  :welcome:

Charlie really shouldn't be with you that young its not good for his health. they are not normally fully weaned until 14 weeks. Did the breeder say he was weaned? what did he say to feed him and when if you like email me direct at [email protected] might be easier that way

You can try vegetables done in the liquidiser , your baby is a bit young so she is going to need all the vitamins . Try her on kaytee baby formula to keep her vitamins up. Also spoon feed her as she will like this ,put seeds or pellets in another bowl and see if she will eat by herself.ifnshe is eating by herself give her some palm oil on a tiny piece of toast.

Sweet potato is good ,you can mix it with carrots ,and broccoli. Must make sure she is eating lots and if she is not spoon feed her . Hopefully you don't need to feed with a syringe.

Let us know how you get on and if you have any more questions post up and someone will help mega quick.  Xx

You can make all these things up and freeze them and just take out a little every day. Just give fruit every few days ,or a little bit in whatever she is eating. Don't give  peanuts as they can have mould spores in them and are not good for them . Please remember no question is stupid where a baby is concerned don't be afraid to ask.  Xx

It is very worrying to read a post like this, it really is paramount these babies are completely independant before being allowed home with new parronts!!
Quite frustrating really!

Hope all goes well with your baby hun, Paula will steer you right!

Obviously breeder just wanted rid because of the money, so baby will be better off with someone who cares about it and with Paulas sound advice he should thrive brilliantly x

She is in south African so I don't know if the same rule applies out there? Still out of order letting them go before they are weaned and eating independently

The same rule applies here, however some breeders release the chicks too soon. Best is to do research first and get a chick from a reputable breeder that weans properly before giving to new owner.

hi zandralouw
firstly let me just say how wrong it was of the irresponsible breeder to let you take Lucy before she was fully weaned and independent' a totally wrong thing to do..
i see that Paula as already been in touch and given you advice and maybe a few other people . so if i repeat anything you have already been told by them i do apologise ..
firstly you must continue giving the crushed corn i take this to be baby formula the breeder as left you . and at 10wks old i would be still giving Lucy this about 3 to 4 times a day. in the morning then about dinner time again about teatime and then the last feed would be before going to bed ..
she is old enough to be eating and trying other food but i would soften the food or cook it you can try giving her soft apple orange pomegranate grapes this type of fruit cut into small pieces 1/4 inch. veggies sweet potato sweetcorn loose pieces broccoli carrot . with the veg its best to cook them to make them soft so she can eat them more easily.  it doesn't matter wether your giving seeds or pellets at this age as long as she starts to eat them herself you can  always change her diet once she is independent herself .. if you are giving her seed soak the seed for a hour or two again this is to soften it for her it make it a bit easier for her to dehusk and eat it .
if you are giving her pellets you can also soften them in water or even in some apple juice or something simaler she might like the taste of the juice on the pellets .
i forgot to mention with the baby formula you must feed it warm try using a spoon to feed her. if you just leave it in her food bowl and it goes cold she wont eat it and again i.am sorry if i have just been repeating something you have already been told.
if you could post a photo of Lucy i could tell you right away if she is only 10wks old . i still cant believe a responsible breeder would let a baby go at only 10wks old. if you go to the gallery section on this forum there is a couple of post that do have 10 week old baby greys on them . look for a post called video diary by Nikki h you can see Nikki's baby's there just about 10 weeks old now and there is no way in the world Nikki would let her baby's go at this age. and i myself have posted the growing up of a baby grey Ive just handreared from 14 days old . its called more late nights. if you go to page 10 you will see some videos of a 10 week old baby grey and I'm still feeding him 4 times a day but you will see how he progresses and it might help you with Lucy..

Hi All..  Thank you for all the replies!  Paula, my apologies for not getting back to you yet.  I decided to work with Lucy for a day or 2 and see how it goes.  First of all, I would like to mention that I did not get Lucy from a breeder.  I always pop into my local petshop to get new toys for my Charlie.  I say little Lucy there and just could not stand seeing her in a dirty cage and no toys to keep herself busy.  I see myself as a great animal lover, and persuaded the petshop owner to buy Lucy.  I knew she was still too young, but I also knew in my heart that I would take much better care of my little Lucy...

So here is what happend so far....  I gave her her first bath as there was so much old porridge stuck on her feathers and body...  Now she's even more beautifull and she really enjoyed it!  I am giving her her porridge early in the morning and  then again between 5pm and 6pm.  I give her mashed sweet patato or butternut (just a little bit so her stomach can first get used to it) twice a day in between, and I also boil mixed veggies until soft and cut it into very thin pieces and that I leave in her cage for a while which she eats by herself and she really loves it...

I give her mashed banana every now and then (just a bit).  I also took Lucy to my vet (which is excellent with AG) and he is very happy with her and with what I am doing for her.....  Please let me know if there is anything I am doing wrong..  Lucy is a happy baby, and I will take her for check ups every now and then just to make sure she is still doing okay..

I have not taken a photo of Lucy yet but i will post one as soon as I did....

Aww so glad Lucy is doing well as she was so young.  I can fully understand your views on the pet shop as I'm like that where I live , the cages are absolutley filthy and they have no toys or fresh veg , only  seeds  full of beasties.

Hope all goes well for you and congratulations on your new baby .  Xx

Am pleased to hear Lucy is doing well. Avi Plus makes a handrearing porridge that is really good. You can get it at most pet shops. Good luck and let us know how she goes :)
