Pellet Conversion Tip
« on: October 12, 2011, 01:09:18 PM »

Morning Alll

I thought I'd share this as it might help others who are trying to convert to pellets.

As some of you know I'm struggling getting Elvis eating Pellets.  We've tried Harrisons and now Zumpreem and Hagans - with no luck.

This morning I ground down some Harrisons (between two chopping boards) and then rolled his warm carrots in the bits - so they stuck to the carrots.  He is now tucking in.  Although I'm aware he won't be getting all the Harrisons he is eating a fair amount which is on the carrots.  There is about 10 pellets in all that I ground down.

I'll try anything at the minute !!!

I didn't realise just how stressful and upsetting pellet conversion would be x

Kids are another thing completely -  I could happily sit and watch them leave their food night after night as long as they did it quietly - but furry, fluffy or feathery gets me every time

Aww don't get stressed. Even without pellets he can have a great diet. He will pick up on your stress about the pellets as well.

Just keep putting them in, mixing them with everything and eventually he will eat them.

I found myself getting annoyed the other night when I put his lovingly made mash in and he ignored it, instead went and munched Hagens pellets.

Then I realised - I spent ages getting him to eat the pellets and now I'm annoyed he is ignoring his veggies in favour of the pellets - the poor bird can't win

I would if I was you.....  I've got Jack and Leo to scoff the rest so a bag never reamins full here for long so never had to freeze them.  I think Mandi does and I'm sure she said she seperates them out into portions for a few days / a week x

That is a great tip

Sorry to impose on your thread but after reading about freezing the pellets i have a question.

How long should you keep a bag before you freeze it?

Like if its going to be open max of a month should you still freeze them, i feel terrible now as im not freezing mine

I would say the sooner you freeze them the better - just like with our food.  If you can work out roughly what you are using and split the bag up and freeze straight away and just take out what you need. Obviously you wouldn't need to freeze the whole bag as it would stay fresh while you use some x

Mine are open for about a month/5 weeks but I keep them in the fridge not the freezer. I tend not to freeze becasue I get through them quickly enough. I only freeze if I have used a 1/2 bag for bird bread and it will be a while before I need to make bread again

If your going through them quick enough it doesn't matter - I keep mine in the fridge once opened which keeps them fresher x
