Pellet Food...
« on: November 29, 2011, 11:38:37 PM »

Ok, my question for today.... It is my intention to feed my future parrot on pellets as from what I read it will be better for him.

Now, is it advisable to stick to just one brand or mix a couple together? I just remember years back when I couldn't get my usual dried food for a chinchilla and I had buy something else, the poor creature was not happy!! So I thought if I mixed two different pellets together, if for some reason I couldn't get one and ran out, the parrot would be ok because it was already used to eating another pellet as well. Is this a good idea or not?

Also, if feeding pellets do you still feed them lots of veg and fruit as you would if feeding seed type foods?

I cant see anything wrong with feeding/ mixing 2 kinds of pellets . In fact i think its a good idea really.
I feed veg and fruit still - not as much as before on seeds but still  feed it .

They still need plenty of veg, fruit should be limited because of the high sugar content.

The problem with mixing is that they will pick out the ones they like and chuck the rest. I stick to one brand to feed dry (harrisons) and use another in the bird bread (hagens) that way she is getting a mixture. The pellets are available online so you shouldn't run out if you are organised about ordering in plenty of time

I actually feed 3 different types of pellets at the moment, but I still give veg, chop etc daily and fruit 2-3 times a week

Thanks for the very quick replies!!

I think with the chin pellets they vanished in the post, I am generally very organised!! But saying that it was about 10 years ago, so I can't really remember what happened!

Julie, what do you mean by chop?

If he is eating them I wouldn't worry about giving him a small amount for bed time x

you could mix the pellets and what is left used to bake which would leave less waste and if he likes the mix of pellets if one runs out you've still got another bag, i now dont know any pellets cookie doesnt like. He likes harrisons, hagens, zupreems(one of he's favourites) animal zone where as scooby only likes the tiny circle hagens pellets at the moment. If you can try wean him on different ones so they get a different taste of pellets each day or you could try tempt him buy making some home made toys and hiding pellets in he's toys or making an mash/chop recipe with the pellets blended in. theres so many ways you could try but, the way your doing is doing fine for you so keep up the effort! and good luck.
