Soaking Pellets
« on: May 22, 2011, 11:03:12 PM »

Hi,

I've been reading some topics about soaking pellets and pellets in Orange Juice and was wondering whats the correct way of doing this?

My grey has started to eat pellets on her own now and when she has one in her beak bits of the pellet flys everywhere...is this normal should they be this hard or should they be soft chewable?

any help on what i should do to prep the pellets would be great

Thanks

I found with Charlie that if I soaked them in about a teaspoon of fresh squeezed orange he would eat them, but yeah, they do scatter everywhere.  When you have to buy more try the Fine instead of the Coarse. it's smaller pieces and they seem to get on with that a little bit better.

if she is eating the pellets there is no need to put orange juice on them
but if you feel she is waisting too many then maybe try adding a little amount of water to soften them a little
but i find mine soon got use to them and now dont waste to much,i find myself just pickin them back up and returning them to the bowl xx

The soaking method is usually used to convert them onto pellets if they wont eat them straight away. If she is eating them already then you're on the right track and you don't need to do anything else.

They do scatter and crumble quite a bit, but you'd get the same with seed and such. You could try fine instead of coarse as they are smaller but I've had no experience with it so can't comment on that (yet).

People only soak them in Orange juice to convert them from seed diets, if your bird eats pellets then no need too soak.

They are messy eaters. the bottom of Nico's cage is covered in "pellet dust" when I uncover her in the morning

Yeah it's normal for them to crumble, if she's eating them well no need to soak they go off much quicker that way.

I have no idea, the breeder gave me a huge bag of it, he said he has his own supplier who make them for him which contain the same ingredients as Harrisons pellets

The bag has no name or labels on it

i've seen these pellets i have at a couple other breeders houses i visited when i was looking for a baby grey.

Harrisons are squarish and a little bigger, but i have seen something like them i a good parrot mix and are harder than harrisons.

Honestly, I'd say switch to Harrisons because there's no real proof of what's in them and it's the very early, important stages of your baby's growth. If you trust your breeder maybe continue using them along side Harrisons? It just seems a bit dodgy to me.

I would switch.

You will have to switch slowly. Including some of the old food and some of the new food and gradually reducing the amount of the old food.  Hopefully he will take to the Harrisons easily. The ones the breeder gave you are probably fine but I would be nervous about not knowing exactly what they are and what's in them  :panic:

You'll have to switch eventually anyway when you run out

Convert your bird to harrisons pellets, you may not be able to get them from the breeder in the future.
