i am doing my first lot of sprouting now, don't get my grey for another week but wanted to practise before i got him, the birds in the garden will be eating them this week, i have got a bag of pulses and brown rice soaking mix, i hope this is the right stuff, i am so worried i am going to feed my bird the wrong stuff, left it to soak for overnight, then left for 24 hours on a plate with a paper towel over it, rinsed a few times, now i have rinsed and drained it all ready to go in the fridge, but i cant see any sprouting, does this happen at the point its in the fridge or have i got the wrong stuff, any help would be great thanks

Sounds like you may have the wrong things that you are trying to sprout.  For example, I'm not sure about sprouting brown rice - but most soaking mixes are good for sprouting

Have a look at the attached, and see if that helps, if not, come back t me, and I will get some more information together for you

The vast majority of soaking mixes do sprout - so, I'm sure you will be fine

It can take 3-5 days for the sprouts to appear, and now they have been soaked, as long as you keep them moist, by covering with wet kitchen paper, I'm sure you will soon begin to see small sprouts appearing

Don't worry at all, as you won't be feeding anything you shouldn't from the soaking mix

hi
here's A good reason to feed your bird sprouted seed and pulses
there simply isn't a better food on the market. and your
birds will enjoy and benefit from them. there packed full
of nutrients everything to make your birds happy and
healthy there bursting with trace elements antioxidants
vitamins and minerals enzymes infact there do not contain
anything bad; most people dont sprout because there think
its difficult to do. you could not be more wrong its so simple
i will explain and show you how to sprout in 3 easy steps

step 1
soak your selected seed in a bowl or pan of water for a few hours.
anywere from 6 to 12 hours will be long enough no need to soak
for any longer. now give a really good rinsing and drain off any
excess water. put seed into a container this can be a glass or plastic it really doesn't matter. put the lid on but not tightly.
and place in a dark cupboard till day 2, easy so far.
this is a photo of the seed before it as been soaked

step 2 day 2
the only thing you must remember
you must take the seed and give it a really good rinsing
this is really important its to stop mould forming on the
seed. that's it for day 2 simple so far . here s a photo of
the seed from the second day; 1 from early morning.
and 1 from late afternoon spot the difference;
step 2 day 2

step 3 da y 3
todays the day if you have followed my instructions
your seed should be ready to feed to your birds if
its not quite ready leave for 1 more day. but you
must remember to give a thoroughly good rinsing.
this is most important and about the hardest thing
to do. that about all you have to do except feed it
to your birds here.s some photo s showing the
perfect sprouted seed and pulses ideal to use
on there own or with fruit and veg
enjoy
below are some photos of the seed and pulses as there should look when ready for you to feed to your birds. there can be given on there own or with other treats. ie fruit and veg. or with your normal seed. either way you will be giving your birds the best food ever...

so there you go it is really easy go on give it a try

regards john

thankyou ray
just a quick one.if you put them in the fridge it slows the sprouting process down.
your better of putting them in a dark cupboard. and i should have said there at there best when the tails are just showing about 1/4 of a inch long this is when there at there most nutritious, once there start to get to about 1 inch or more long there not as good but still tastie

This might be a daft question but how much sprouting mix do you guys give for a portion and when is it time to chuck it out?

Lexi is a fan of throwing her sprout mix so I don't know how much exactly she eats, I give her prob 2 table spoons a day and half (if not more) ends up on the floor. At the moment our mix is still in the fridge, it has been 4 days since I soaked it and the sprouts are really small yet but I am worried about giving her the mix if the pulses are *off*

You don't have to wait for the sprouts to appear to feed it. Just feed it after soaking it overnight
