Can seeds tell if you are rubbish at cooking?? I definately feel like mine are laughing at me.  :cry2: My stupid seeds won,t sprout  :grumble: :grumble: They,re mocking me. They know I can,t cook for toffees and they,re mocking me.  :cry2: :cry2: And I took cooking at school aswell - I made lemonade and toast with a topping of my choice.
I chose Dairylee - lush!  :yummy:

Sorry miss  :rose: Well I am at least using the correct seeds this time as you know.
I rinsed a handfull under the tap. Then soaked them for about 6 hours.Rinsed them and changed the water and left them overnight.Rinsed them again and left them to dry in the fridge on some kitchen paper. They still didn,t sprout after about 3 days so I just microwaved them for him instead.  :grumble: :grumble:
Seeds are a living thing and can sense when people are thick at cooking.
Same as horses and dogs can tell if someone is nasty  :ignore:

Yeah they may have dried out a little bit  :grumble: I will persevere with them Irina .
I shall not be beaten! Hoorah!

And Squid I made sure the other seeds weren,t watching me cook their friends. I took them in the other room and turned the telly up a bit.

Didn't I tell you - you don't need to sprout them for 3 days - soak a portion overnight, rinse, put on a slighty wet paper towel, or best cover with a slightly wet paper towel and leave on the table top. Don't put away in the fridge. By the evening you should see mung beans (the green oblong things) starting to sprout. Smell the lot, if it doesn't smell sour and looks good, rinse thoroughly again, dry it up and give it to Boy. Put the rest away in the fridge.

Hi
I can now sprout seeds fairly consistantly, more by luck than judgemrnt, What are the big yellow ones? Rosie not keen on those. She likes the seed shaped ones, green ,a bit like pumpkin seeds(are they?) I am just pleased that she will try them. she only eats about 6 but better than none.

Hi Alys, big yellow ones are chickpea and green ones are pumpkin seeds, yes.  Digby didn't eat chickpeas too to start with, but now seems to try most of the seeds in the mix. 6 seeds for a small parrot is probably as a handful for us, so if you think about it - it is a very good amount

:yummy: :yummy: :yummy: it looks great!!! If Boy doesn't eat but throws most of the stuff out, watch what he throws out the most (though they do take special pleasure in just chucking the stuff around)  and try chopping that in sunflower-size bits. Also it is no wonder he is throwing the stuff out he has so much to spare!! Digby gets sprouts for breakfast and nothing else - he is not a big breakfast eater, but he gets cooked lunch and dinner - 3 tablespoons of food each time (cooked grains, pulses, sprouts, chopped veg, pomegranate grains etc.) and in between he only has pellets in the cage. So by the lunch and dinner time he is hungry enough not to waste much food   People often overfeed their parrots and that creates picky parrots.

Yeah I totally agree with you Irina - I do overfeed but Monday to Friday I am out of the house all day so it has to last him.I don,t feed him anything else till next morning apart from a piece of toast when I get home or some chamomile tea.
His favourite veg is peas in their pods and fruit is banana, pomegranite and lychee (when Available).

just be careful with leaving sprouts for longer than 3 hours, as they can spoil. It shouldn't be a problem with fresh veg and fruit though. Boy is very well cared for, well done, Matty!  We should introduce some sort of reward system -like medals or something, for special achievements in parrot care on here

Awww..thankyou Irina  :cheekkiss: that is great - especially coming from you!
He gets that treatment every morning too - and I will make sure that whenever I give him sprouted seed,I will remove them when I get in from work.
And I would be honoured to accept my award - thankyou  :rose:

Hi

I think that because I am feeding cats ,dogs and horses when you feed the parrot it seems such a tiny amount . Also the food can be quite large so a tiny piece seems mean. If the bird ate it all ,how much in size would you expect it to eat(if that makes sense)? What size is their stomach? Are ponsettia leaves poisonous? I have been given one and it is near Rosie ,she cant reach it but if cage got rolled a bit !!

Thanks Alys

I am not actually sure what size stomach they have, and it is about their crop size I think, as this is where food goes and stays in at first and only then gradually goes down. The crop is located right on top of the chest and when it is full you can feel it when touching. The other day I gave an example with an apple - if for us a 30g piece of apple is nothing, for a parrot, who is at least 100 times smaller, it is like eating 3kg of apples. But on the other hand their metabolism is much faster, so they need food more often. But even a small amount for them is sufficient to get the benefit of one or another food. But of course almost all food they are given should benefit them in one way or another, because if a parrot is given 6 sprouts and the rest is just dry seed or table foods then of course the affect of the sprouts will be lost. But because Rosie is getting a good diet overall, even a small amount is good

Can someone tell me ( in idiot proof language please, ) how to make birdy bread, and how to sprout seeds? I know it was all on here, but now I can't find it, and the only conclusion I can come to, is that it has been stolen. :baseballbat: ans Matt, your picture of sprouted seeds was incredible, JUST incredible. In fact it's the most incredible thing I have ever seen  :dance:you must be immensely proud.
