Sweet Potato, Courgette and Radishes
« on: June 01, 2011, 07:15:49 AM »

I'm gonna be buying Tru these to try. So can I just check, with the sweet potato can he eat the skin or should that be peeled? Obviously it would be washed well. I intend to freeze potions  as well, which I have read is ok. Also how do you feed radishes and courgettes?
A whole radish, half, washed, peeled?
I don't eat courgette so don't know how to serve this either. Just chopped and washed?
Can either the radish or courgette be frozen?

I sound like a great cook don't I.
Went to Morrisons yesterday for 1st time in years and forgot all about looking at different fruit/veg cause I went to the seeds/beans etc. Managed to get mung beans and a few other bits I haven't found elsewhere, so not a bad shop apart from having to go tesco  this morning before walk for the above. Next time I'll write a list.
Thanks,

Doh, just read my post back after submitting and realised it reads like I'm gonna stuff an uncooked sweet potato in my freezer. I will try him with raw then cook some and freeze. Radishes will keep for  a while and I will cook some courgette and freeze that aswell. Can the courgette be fed raw? Forgot to ask that. Sorry.

Radishes and courgettes can be fed raw, there's no need to peel. I tend not to freeze them becasue they go soggy after.

Sweet potatoes I always peel and if they are cooked they should freeze well

Thanks for the soggy tip Liz. I wouldn't want a soggy courgette, and nor would Truman.

How much courgette do you give them? For some reason I thought it was something that shouldn't be fed...

I quarter it then cut each quarter into chunks and give 2 chunks.

i would scrub radishes really well since they grow in the ground. That applies to sweet potatoe too, but I would peel it if feeding raw but you can keep the skin on if cooking it, you could alway peel it afterwards, supposedly more nutrients will stay in that way and won't leach out in water. Cooked sweet potatoes should keep well.
You don't need to peel courgettes, in fact in most vegetables the largest amount of nutrients is found in the skin, just a good wash should be enough  can always wash with a bit of ACV added to water if in doubt.

Thanks everyone. Most helpful.
Was BOGOF on radishes and sweet potato and courgette were very reasonable, so will feed courgette fresh by just buying one every few days. That is if he likes them.
Will try with skin on first after washing very well.
Can I ask please Irina what is ACV?
Also if the items in safe food sections are safe for AG are they safe for other parrots and cockatoos aswell?
Cause I like to take different bits in for the birds at work but don't want to feed anything that would be bad for them. Triton and Ducop cockatoos for example.
Many thanks.

whatever is safe for greys is safe for other parrots  the only difference is with fatty items like nuts and palm oil - cockatoos and amazons should have less of those than greys and macaws - more.
