Switching From Seeds To Pellets
« on: November 04, 2011, 10:06:28 PM »

 :wiggle:
As some of you know I have had Thabo from 11 weeks old last May and when we got him he was fed on mixed parrot food (dried chillies, nuts, seeds etc) but I have read a lot about you all feeding on pellets. He does have a good fresh food diet everyday he has fruit and a mix of fresh veg which he enjoys. He has never plucked or shown any sign of stress and he does spend a lot of time with us as a family so I hope that helps. Do you think it might be a bad thing if I tried changing his diet to pellets while he seems happy with what he has now?

Pellets are a better diet, but that does not mean that a seed based diet can't be healthy.
If you do want to get him on Pellets, then I would say go for it, we have lots of advice in the diet section
Although most of us use Harrison's, a lot of us are now converting our birdies to Animalzone pellets etc as they are as good as Harrison's, if not better, they also have lots of different products so your birdie can have other healthy foods and they are cheaper than Harrison's, which is a plus

I got Budge only..um 3 weeks ago now I think - gosh time is running lol
He was / is on Johnston and jeff low sunflower mix and also gets fresh veg and fruit.
And every morning a grape in his treasurebox lol
|I thought about a change as well as all are talking about pellets.
But when you look at Budge he is so good looking and healthy so I will leave it like it is for now.

Thats right Kirsten I have read about changing to pellets but as I said Thabo is a happy bird He has the opportunity to fly around the house most of the day. So he gets plenty of exercise, he is a very confident bird, wants to play fight all the time but cuddles into me especially so why change something that works for you

please dont shoot me down but im gonna tell it like it is
your greys may look "healthy" now but who says in 2 yrs, 5 yrs or even 10 yrs time, nit-pickin at seeds wil keep em healthy
seed diets usually just allow the bird to pick out their favorite bits so therefor they arent getting a balanced diet so supplements wil then need to be given, and how do we know when we givin them the supplements they getting the right amount ??
at least with a pellet diet you know they getting al they need
plus unlike seeds, pellets have no waste
i guess its the difference between livin 15 or 50 yrs

2 of my birds were rehomes, and were both seed junkies, they suffer from liver problems because seed is very fattening

Seed all day every day to a birds liver, is like 3 fry-ups a day, every day to a human.

Seed causes fatty liver syndrome, and can shorten a birds life by many many years.

I only give seed as a very very rare special treat

I feed pellets for the same reasons mandi does. I just can't be sure that with seeds she is eating the right amounts of everything

Since I changed Sid from a seed diet back in May he is a changed bird. his feathers have grown back and are all in good condition, he is more friendly to all the family and seems to be content in himself. I bought a small bag and they didn't last two weeks as he couldn't get enough of them. Try them and you will be surprised at the difference they make.

I went for Harrisons, as they seemed to be what most people on here were using. But now there seems to be a leaning towards Animalzone pellets as a few of us got free samples. Sid doesn't like these as they are quite soft, he likes crunching  you will have to try Thabo with a few and see what he likes.

So if I changed to pellets how much will Thabo need in a day and what other stuff should he have?

Have a look in the diet section, you can see what you can give your Greys in there, there is loads of advice about feeding.
