Switching To Pellet Feed
« on: October 09, 2011, 05:05:09 PM »

I've been trying to get Georgie to eat pellets since Tuesday, before then he's been on a mixed seed diet, we soon learnt he was only eating the sunflower seeds.

I bought some Harrison's high potency coarse pellets and he's having none of it. Initially i was mixing some seeds with them but Georgie just ate the sunflower seeds. I've tried soaking the pellets in some orange juice as suggested by another member.....but no joy. Tried with some apple juice and again he won't eat them.

Should i take away all treats, stop giving him fruit and veg so that he has no option but to eat the pellets when he's hungry? Bearing in mind he's a feather plucker....would this do more harm then good?

Not sure where to turn next....HELP!!

Hiya from me, the proud owner of 4 pellet converted greys
2 of which were pluckers
1 stil is  :cry2:
the way i would go about it now is , give the seed though be it a very small amount, say 1 tbl spoon in a morning, leave it there for a hr and then remove and replace with pellets, first try them again soaked and see how you go
keep us posted and we wil try and help you al the way

Hi Ann-Marie,

Georgie ate only 1 pellet yesterday, i counted out more for last night, this morning he hadn't touched them. I gave him a few seeds and he demolished them straight away. Counted out more pellets and whilst I've been at work he's started munching them. As I'm typing this he's eating more of them, without them being soaked too

Good that he's finally eating the pellets now and that he's getting good balance of what he needs from them. Later today i will do him some fruit and veg, he loves broccoli!!

Thats brilliant!!!

As he gets more of a taste for them you can keep reducing the amount of seed

When I got Marley I was given a box of nutri bird p15 tropical pellets. He wouldn't touch them at first but I left them in his cage, on my return from work he had taken it upon himself to soak them in his water before eating them! He now has them daily along with fresh food and seeds as a treat.

Finally Georgie is eating pellets, just got in from work and he's cleared his bowl of them  Each day he has been eating a few more, gave up with soaking them. In the end i just sprinkled some seeds over them and restricted the amount of treats. Now the seeds can be used as treats rather than a way to get him eating pellets.

Georgie is like a different bird....he seems happier in him self, i'm sure he's not going at his feathers plucking as much, he's letting us stroke him without attacking as much, playing with his toys etc

Thank you for all the great advice!!

Ann-Marie, i feel so much happier knowing he's eating pellets and getting a good balance of all he needs, just recieved some zupreem i oredered and a load of freebies...plumage enhancer, muesli, fruit chunks. Just popped some Zupreem and plumage food in his bowl and Georgie got stuck in straight away.

He wasn't interested in the treats i had for him (we're trying to train him to allow us to touch him). So i gave up on the training and let him keep munching the pellets

Chris if you mix seed and pellet she is bound to pick the familiar fatty tasty seeds over the pellet that she doent have a clue on how they taste or how good they are for her
i would give seed of a set amount for a set time, remove completly and replace with just pellet for the rest of the day, give back seed (small amount) just befor bed
i doubt she wil starve herself  :nono:

I converted Casper by doing what Mandi said. Small ammount of his Tidymix seed for his breakfast with his piece of toast and palm oil. Then tough love with just pellets for the rest of the day!!!! He started with a couple and now woofs them down. They won't starve themselves but may screech a bit more as they will be hungry. Obviously I did this only as he was a good weight and in fine feather!!! Oh those were the days haha....
