None of them eat enough Pat, Zuri is not so bad, but at the moment Traff will only eat them if starving, and he can't afford to lose any weight  :panic:

well, we eat foods similar to pellets - all sorts of fortified cereals, milk with added calcium, etc. - all these different products are pretty similar to the idea of a pelleted diet. There are plenty of parrots who love their pellets, it is just a matter of habit in their case - there really isn't that much difference for them to eat a boring seed mix or a boring pellet, once they are used to one or the other. For example Digby barely ate any of the seed mix when he was offered it at the vets. He just chucked the things around just because he is not used to it. He only recognises his pellets or normal fresh stuff as food now.
I know one thing that when your parrot gets ill or it turns out he has mineral and vitamin deficiencies a seed diet or a diet full of other foods, apart from pellets seems very inadequate and right now I feel quite guilty for not insisting on Digby eating more of his pellets, even though he ate some. Now a lot of treats were taken away we are enjoying our Harrisons again and hoping for a quick recovery (we as in me and Digby  )

I think Tidymix is considered a superior seed mix. I would imagine that along with a good selection of veg and small amounts of fruit, that birds will get a good diet. Lets face it, we have all seen poor seed diets, so Tidymix has got to be better than that. I just think there is 'more than one way to skin a cat'.

Sorry, meant the above for parrots that really dont like pellets. Took the words from my mouth Bob.

I agree Irina if they will eat pellets then that is the way to go, don't think many would disagree with that.
The problem is a big majority won't, so then we have to find the next best option. There is no way I could carry on with pellets with Traff as he started losing weight which he can ill afford to do, so the next best option to me was tidymix. He does eat pellets occasionally but very unenthusiastically.

Pinky, Tidymix is not any different to any other seed mix in composition and its nutritional value - the only difference is that tidymix contains human grade ingredients, and that is why it's considered superior, not because it is of superior nutrition.
You would have thought that a seed mix and fresh stuff would provide enough nutrition, but unfortunately it just doesn't work that way. Apart from numerous cases given as an example all over the internet, I've had "the pleasure" of finding it out for myself - Digby is on a varied diet, and he was eating pellets, but probably about 20-30% of his diet, and our recent blood test showed he is deficient in calcium, low on iron and other vitamins and minerals are not tested for so there is no way to know that. That is why I am sure more than ever that pellets is the way to go.
Bob, I totally understand you and Pat too, and some Tidymix is not bad, but I would continue to offer pellets (I assume you don't bake pellet bread, do you?  ) and limit tidymix to one tablespoon a day so that it provides enough calories for Traff to keep his weight steady but not too much so that he turns his nose up at other foods. Or you could just feed them on schedule and don't leave any food in cages in-between (one meal seed with fresh stuff, another one pellets for example). If he is just not up for it then get a good multi-vitamin/mineral supplement perhaps to make sure you cover the basics. Oh and have you tried Harrisons bread and/or Power Treats?

Oh I didnt realise. I knew about the human grade bit, I thought it has less of the high fat seeds such as sunflower seeds than other mixes. Our local pet shop's parrot seed mix is nearly all sunflower, surely thats worse. I haave been trying Casper on pellets, using the conversion tips but no success yet. I just took Paula's advice to feed Tidymix as well when Casper came to me

well yes, it does look better than your regular pet shop mix, but if you put all the bits together it won't be particularly superior nutritionally (cleaner, safer - that is for sure, but not a lot more superior in nutrition), in fact, probably of the whole mix the most nutritious thing is sunflowers   they are just way too high in fat. But it still contains bad for them peanuts, too many high fat seeds and way too many nuts (a grey shouldn't have more than 2 nuts a day), including Brazils which are notorious for harbouring aspergillosis (same as peanuts), garlic sticks are fun but same thing as any other cracker - very poor nutritionally. Those fruit chunks are basically pure sugar, and I wouldn't even eat them myself  It does contain some grains like barley and oats but I very much doubt it many parrots eat it, and it just seems so unappetising to eat those things raw, you would basically provide the same thing if you cooked some oats, barley, mung beans, peas, wheat and corn (which is very poor nutritionally too) and they would be easier on digestion that way at least, or better yet sprout some. It says it has added kelp, kelp is powder, how do they insure it stays on the seeds and doesn't just fall through? And you have to be careful as to how much of it you give to birds - it is very high in iodine and can cause thyroid problems in excess.

Sorry, I am not trying to put you off Tidymix though, it is just not an optimal diet, that is all.

I don't bake pellet bread Irina
I will continue with the pellets, but not as I previously did it, I was taking out all food in the afternoon and only leaving pellets, but he was just not eating enough and losing weight  :panic:
One tablespoon of tidy mix would last Traff about 5 minutes , would have to give more than that.
I think it is different to most other mixes due to the sunflower content and almost all shelled.
What  multi-vitamin/mineral supplement would you recommend Irina?
