What Is This Plant And Is It Safe?
« on: October 16, 2011, 06:16:43 PM »

I'm a little embarrassed to post this, today Flint went over to this plant and started munching a leaf that had fallen off it (embarrassed as it never occured to me hw would try to eat it!).
I quickly took the pic then took the leaf away but can anyone help with what it is and is it safe for him to nibble or should I just get rid of it?

Well at least if he pops his clogs I can say it was a pretty plant that did it!

Oh dear, shouldn't laugh about such things! But he did survive eating a toilet block so I reckon a tiny bit of a leaf won't be the end of him

Oh now I feel Im jinxing him - somebody please tell me its fine!!!

He did, well at least he destroyed it. It was a really horrible experience, I really thought I'd killed him.

But he must not have 'eaten' any or very much as he was fine. I was so scared though, kept waiting on something bad to happen.

I don't recommend using those rim blocks when you have curious parrots around!

You can't just leave it at that Rachel, you have to tell all.  :secret:
The plant I think is a Carmona bonsai known as a Fukien Tea. Have a look at this link
http://www.bonsaigardener.org/fukien-tea-bonsai.html It may help

El, you are right it's a ficus, which is part of the fig family. And it appears that it is poisonous except for the fruit, sap, leaves etc.are no good. So it's a  :nono: :nono:

Thank you Ann!

I'll move it now and make sure the little beggar can't get near it.
He seems to have taken a liking to plant pots all of a sudden - I think I'll go out and get some pebbles to put on the top of the soil to stop him rooting around in the muck.

Rachel I think I am the worst parrot owner on here, I think I am being safe and then I turn round and he is eating a tampon, or a poisonous plant or a toilet block!

You'd think they would know better what things are bad for them wouldn't you?!
Definitely like children, with no sense of danger  :panic:

I managed to do a bit of digging there.

According to Ikea its a Ficus Microcarpa Ginseng. Commonly known as Indian Laurel Fig tree.

According to the following link, the foliage of this is non toxic to parrots - phew!!!
http://www.parrot-and-conure-world.com/non-toxic-for-birds.html

The only fig tree whose leaves are toxic is the weeping fig tree, which my one isn't.

Indeed, he lives to fight another day

I was checking that the lemon trees I brought in are safe as well - so now with the pebbles on top to try to keep him out of the muck we should be safe.

Until he finds something else to try to kill himself with that is  :grumble:
