I just had a look and it mentions laurel leaf alongside fig. Correct me if I am wrong but laurel is poisonous and I know this as I have a bay tree, which when I got it I looked up how to care for it and they said not to confuse bay with laurel, as it can make you ill. I'm confused now.

Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis) is poisonous, but Fig Laurel (ficus microcarpa) isn't apparently!

Different trees but a common word in their everyday names

ps Safe or not I don't plan to let him go around eating all my houseplants 

But I feel happier knowing that if he picks up a fallen leaf or something its not going to kill him!

Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis)  is edible. I have just looked it up in my gardening book, the ordinary laurel, which looks like a bay tree is the poisonous one.  You had me worried there as I always use bay leaves.

Oops sorry, I looked up the name for bay laurel - thinking that was the same as laurel (which is poisonous) - obviously its not the same though!

These plants, too many have the same word in their names!!

Why do they have to have complicated Latin names, who speaks Latin anyway nowadays...well not me anyway

I think its just done to confuse the likes of me. Admittedly it doesn't take much!
