What to do with food you're no longer going to use?
« on: January 22, 2012, 12:12:30 PM »

Hi...

We got a huge sack of high quality parrot seed mix when we first bought our cage and initial supplies before bringing Dolly home (2 weeks ago).

We have decanted about 1kg of it into a storage container and were up until last week feeding her this daily...

However she has now started and taken to AZ fruit chunk pellets, so we now have best part of a full sack (over £30 worth) left in the cupboard, more than likely not to be used again...

It seems a waste to let it sit there or worse, throw it away...

So... what do I do with it all? Do people buy it off others? Can it be used for anything else?

Help!

Thanks  :yummy:

Feed it to the birds in your garden, they'll love it.

Oh... that's ok?

I wasn't sure if it was ok for all birds?

In that case, I will throw it out there every few days...

My parents actually have a lot of birds come into their garden, so I will give some to them too...

I've only just seen your posts and just wanted to warn you of what happened to me when I threw out what was left in the bottom of Baileys seed bowl each time I fed her.

I used to tip the remainder of her seeds into the corner of my vegetable pot and thought I might end up with some corn and maize growing, but didn't bank on what I did end up with!! Some of the seed mixes contain hemp seeds and I ended up with cannabis plants growing wild in the corner of my vegetable plot!!

I feed a small amount of the seed mix in with Baileys pellets and she loves eating them both. It wont hurt her if she has a few.

I also picked out the sunflower seeds to feed her as a special treat for being a good girl and that's now the only way I can get her to go back into her cage with a promise of a sunflower seed or two.

A small amount of mixed seeds or parrrot mix every now and then wont harm Dolly at all. Sounds like you are doing a sterling job, well done!

Mandi.....Glynn is reading this.....next village.  I think hemp is same family but legal...or is it the other way round.   I wouldn't know it either if I had a garden full of it, would think it was a weed too.   :panic:

I've just looked at a 'marijuana website and this is what it says-

Quote
"Marijuana and Hemp are both Cannabis Sativa L., the species of plant is the same.

Hemp and Marijuana are the same thing, but they are at opposite ends of the "Get You High Spectrum".
Hemp seeds will grow Hemp type cannabis plants and Marijuana seeds will grow Marijuana type cannabis plants - that's it!
If you want to get a good buzz from Hemp you would have to selectively breed for many generations - what a waste of time!" End of quote.

Mind you, that's still far too risky for me to be scattering them around my vegetable plot with my nosey neighbours!! The plant looked exactly the same as its illegal counterpart and as much as I crave excitement, I do not fancy being locked in a police cell whilst they 'make their enquiries because unless it is scientifically tested, the police wouldnt know whether it was actually cannabis or hemp?? Oh blimey!!

We can't breath sometimes for the smell of cannabis - we live 50 yard from the local police station and either the police men burn all the stuff they confiscate or smoke it in the car park

Hate the stuff, it stinks horrible and there's no mistaking its smell.
