What to Feed my Parrot
« on: December 29, 2011, 10:31:37 PM »

Hi All

As the subject says i need advice on whats the best things to feed my 7 year old African Grey Parrot (Vegetables and nuts act). Im a new parrot owner as I've only had him 4 weeks due to him being my mothers who unfortunatly passed away, and as she loved him so much i knew that she would have wanted me to give him a home, but as i can't ask her what i should be feeding him I'm hoping people on here could give me as much info and advice as possible as i would hate to be doing the wrong thing for him, I'm currently also feeding him Pretty Bird African Pellets.

Many thanks in advance for any help given and probably won't be my first post asking for help.

Hi darrell nice to meet you. I know people on here feed animalzone pellets as well as Harrison's. Pellets are the way forward as they provide a complete diet. You can also feed veg and fruit as a treat.

Aww do sorry to hear about your m passing away.  I bet she is up In heaven, thinking well Darryl is doing a good job looking after my baby .  Well done to you for taking him on and giving it a loving home.  Birds seem to like the animal zone things and they are better and cheaper than the rest of the pellets  ,  you can buy them on line . I got mine from Scarlett's as she
Posts abroad for me.  Your new baby will be missing his mum so just take things at his pace just now . Just the same as you will miss her but you understand what's happened your little bird won't .  Hope things go well for you And Any questions no matter how stupid you think they are,  well they are not stupid to us .  Lots of
Love xx

Hi there, and welcome to the forum

I will move your post to the introduce yourself section, then there's will see your post easily and welcome you too

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, it's terrible. You are doing a great thing by taking care of your ate mothers African Grey :-)

Many people on here, myself included, as Glynn says, feed Animal Zone Pellets.

The main advantage this has over seed is that they provide a complete balanced diet - unlik seed mixes, where the birds can pick out the tastiest seeds, and discard the remainder. It is still a good dea to feed dily veg, cooked or raw, and occasional treats like nuts and fruit.

Have a look through the diet section, as there is so much valuable information there.

If you need anything further, lik where to get the pellets from, or any general information, post up, and someone Will be along to help

Hi there darrell and welcome to the forum.  Tezza moved it and I've moved it back hahaha.  I think the diet place is more beneficial, you will get lots of replies about how to care for Basil and what to feed, what not to feed.  I'm sure if you have a look around you will see that there is a wealth of information on here and if you need to know anything, then just shout because we are all here to help and we were all in the same position as you at one time or another, so don't feel as though you can't ask questions and join in with other threads because you are more than welcome.

Basically the Plumage Enhancer, Museli and Cereal are the three main things, they also do Fruit Sticks, but you actually get some fruit sticks in with the Museli.  The Enhancer and Museli can be left in their dishes all day for them, the Cereal needs to be mixed with a drop of water and because it is then a "wet" food, should only be left in their dish for a couple of hours at the most to avoid bacteria growing.  I usually give mine a handful of Enhancer and Museli mixed in the mornings and again in the afternoon if they need topping up.  With Animalzone, it's a complete meal, so in theory you could just give them the Enhancer or just the Museli but to give them a variety I mix them, also you don't NEED to give them fruit and veg with AZ foods, but that would be a little like us eating salads day after day after day, so to give them a change/variety and something to forage for by all means give veg and fruit in moderation as well.

I think the only dumb question Darrell is the question you don't ask!

As Pat has moved the post back here, why don't you post up in the introduce yourself section aswell, telling everyone about you and your new grey etc - a great place to start, and that way, lots of people will get to know you and give you some great general help and advice

I got the large ones ,they are a good size,  yes you can feed them every day . My 2 like them and they get carrot, beans, sprouted seeds, peas corn   Pumkin every day . For fruit I give them apple,a grape and kiwi, pomegranate.  Avocado is poisonous so that's a no no .

I initially got the large pellets, but found the small to be much better....less waste.

With the large, my two tend to pick them up, take a bit, and then the pellets break in half, and half goes on the floor.  With the small ones, this happens much less, so the food lasts me longer, less waste, less expense

Firstly  :hiya and welcome to the forum,
any pellets would do, i use quite a few, hagens, harrisons, animal zone, zupreem there all good but can work out expensive, so i buy them all at once and spend over £100 on things so i can get free delievery but it all depends on what your parrot likes, i have to say i do recommend the animal zone because scooby clears he's dish everyday of them, but the others are good in there own ways.
alot of vegtables are important for vitimines so give them that, nuts arent too healthy for them so there a treat give about 1-3 a day for good behaviour, there is alot on here that would beneifit you. as i speak both birds have just cleared there dish of good so i better get going, ask as many questions no matter how silly they seem cos they may seem silly to you but others might be wondering aswell.
