Won't Eat Pellets
« on: October 11, 2011, 11:04:50 PM »

er have had Apollo for a week now, he is still a baby at 13 weeks today, he will not touch the hagens i have tried soaking them in pomegranate juice or orange till there soft i have given like they are, put them in with the sprouting mix and tidy mix and he still wont touch them he picks them up tries to bit it then just drops them, he loves his sprouting stuff and tidy mix yes he only eats the sunflower seeds, so my question is how do i get him to eat them or should i try a different pellet and see how that goes, he doesn't really eat any veg he just turns his nose up, i don't want to starve his, he is having some vitamins on a grape everyday, and ideas please

I used an eye dropper to applie, and warmed the honey, you don't need a lot Karen just a very light coating on the pellets.

I've been trying for over a week to get Georgie to take to his pellets, then a few days ago he tried one. each day he's eaten a few more and i've just got home from work to find he has cleared his bowl of pellets

I tried initially soaking them but nope he was having none of it, in the end i sprinkled a few seeds over them, cut down the amount of treats, and of course he ate the seeds first, then moves onto the pellets. Such a relief to see him finally eating them. Keep trying i'm sure you'll get there in the end.

Try crushing them and sprinking a wee bit on a grape since he is used to getting his meds that way

hi Rachel
with Apollo don't try to rush Apollo  or expect Apollo to immediately like everything you give him he s still a baby at 13wks old he s only just been weaned a couple of weeks so he doesent have likes and dislikes yet some baby's don't become fully weaned till there about 16wks . theres absolutely nothing wrong with him just eating seeds for now not even only the sunflower seeds . at this age i would be getting him to eat and try as much fruit and veg as you can and over the coming months you can find out what he likes best seeds or pellets . he s not long of the feeding formula so don't expect to much to soon rachel. what he s eating now is not going to hurt him . also with the tidymix try soaking some for a couple of hours and then put some in his bowl this might help.
with the fruit and veg make sure you cut it in to small pieces. with the grapes cut them in half or quarter most parrots wont eat a grape if you give it  them whole for some reason so its best to cut them in half ,an easy way to know what size to cut food for a Bird look at his top beak an cut you food half the size of his top beak .then its about the right size.
also i see you are give vitamins every day theres no need to give them this often once a week is ok as long as you give Apollo a well balanced diet ie fruit veg seed or pellets he will be fine..
so again i wouldn't be to concerned with what he like at this age , it would be diffrent if he was 2 or 3 years old and fed nothing but sunflower seed that's a different story.

Just had a thought.

For pellet conversion.

I know Flint LOVES anything that you offer him from a spoon. I don't know why - whether because he thinks it ours or if he associates it with when he was young and being fed.

But might work to make some pellet mush, maybe with orange juice or warm water and offer from a spoon?
