Yoghurt?
« on: May 28, 2011, 04:26:33 PM »

Both of my birds were begging for yoghurt this morning (unusual for them) so I gave them a spoonful. A short while later, I noticed Zazu's droppings were normal coloured but had the consistency of split pea soup, and weren't formed properly. Chip's were fine. Unfortunately, I didn't notice whether or not they were like that before, and so not sure how much (if any) to attribute the change to the yoghurt?

He's been acting slightly off the last couple days, so I decided that it was better to be safe than sorry (especially with the holiday on Monday) and took him to the vet. They did a poo swab and didn't find anything out of the ordinary, so I'm thinking it's just the yoghurt, but am keeping a close eye on him and giving him an AviPro supplement.

Do anyone else's birds have different droppings after eating yogurt?

if the state of  droppings was caused by any food then they should get back to normal within about 2 hours. If they stay different from normal for longer then it is a cause for concern and it's worth trying a different vet, because just looking at poop is not good enough! They would need to culture the poop, do a sensitive test and then prescribe an appropriate antibiotic to treat whatever is wrong. Also, loose poop is not necessarily bacteria or yeast (which you can find by looking at the poop), so a further investigation would be needed especially if you think he has been off for a couple of days!

My birds have natural yogurt twice a week and I can't say I've ever noticed a difference in their poo after.

Lesley, it is lactose which is not good for them, but yogurt and cottage cheese have very little of it, so are fine. Best to get fat free stuff without any additives. Those a good source of calcium and yogurt also contains beneficial bacteria

Slightly off topic but is Actimel beneficial at all, or is it high in lactose etc. Haven't given him any, just wondered

Putting my sensible head on for a moment
The ingredients in Actimel are Yogurt (Skimmed milk, Skimmed milk concentrate, Yogurt cultures), Water, Skimmed milk, Dextrose, Stabiliser (pectin), L.casei imunitass® cultures, Flavouring, Sweeteners (aspartame, acesulfame K)
Doesn't sound good for parrots to me.

Taking it off again  :butt:

Hm...the one I gave them this morning wasn't 'natural' yogurt, it was raspberry - could that have something to do with it?

These are the ingredients:
organic yogurt, organic sugar, organic raspberries (7.5%), organic cream (4.4%), natural flavouring

That doesn't sound too bad to me Alison, maybe the sugar content is not good but sure it won't have any lasting effect
