Are Timnehs A Timid Breed?
« on: November 28, 2011, 04:52:48 PM »

I have adopted a 6-8 year old male Timneh named, Otis.
He's a ham on his own, non-stop talker, singer and whistler. I kid and say, "He came preloaded."
I have had him since June, my first grey, but definitely not my first parrot.
I currently have a B&G and a Senegal. But I have had amazons, Too's nad various othe birds growing up.
Otis was somebody's baby for sure. Just watching his antics, dancing, singing playing with his toys.
Here is why I ask if they are a timid breed. I don't know what his previously handling training has been. I have gotten him to step up. But he wont stay on my fingers, (I do like a, two finger point). He wants to step up, he present his foot for me, gets on and gets right off. We do this over and over. Then he drops his wings,  starts with these baby chirping that sounds to me like baby noises, or maybe an urgency or excitement? I am not sure.
The dropping wings is not an illness thing, He's been checked cleared by my Avian Vet.
I really would like him to be able to enjoy a T-Stand or playstand. But I can't get him off the cage, I have tried the tiniest, slight little movements. Plus smaller expectations. He just flies back or keeps putting his foot down and won't let go of my finger while the other is heldfast to the cage.
He does come out of his cage and plays on his playtop.
Once in a while he has taken a flight in the house. But then he is all freaked out and wont step up. he will walk and waddle back to his cage.
I'm loving this guy, he is so smart, that he makes it difficult for me to wrap my head around training this guy.

Thanks for listening. :ty

 :hiya to the forum
the baby sound and drop wings you refer to is a sighn of affection
its not really meant to be encouraged , but it does mean he really likes you
when he steps up with the 1 foot , praise him up
i have a rescue in at the mo and my partner who is her chosen person encouraged her with the secon food by placing a treat further up his arm with the other hand so she had to step on to reach it (hope you following) this seemed to work for us

Hi and  :hiya to the forum

The dropping of the wings and baby noises are because he loves you
I can't tell you if TAG's are timid as I have CAG's but I guess it would depend on the birds personality as there are never 2 the same, I have 3 CAG's and they are all different in their personalities

I'm sure someone else will be along and maybe better to answer your question, you'll find us a friendly bunch and always do our best to help/ guide anyone in the correct direction.

Hi and  :hiya to the forum
Don't think Timneh's are more timid really although of course it varies from bird to bird.
Otis doesn't sound timid anyway, as Mandi says the drooped wings and baby noises are actually the mating dance
How long have you had him?

Hi there, welcome to the forum. I have 2 Timneh's and Billy we have had since June too. He came to me in quite a small cage so that was one of the 1st things we changed and he has only just ventured up onto the top play stand. I wouldn't say they were timid as my other one Bella is very feisty. Just give him plenty of time to settle in as 5/6months isnt a long time. I'm sure he will come round and enjoy his play stand in no time at all.. He sounds adorable :yahoo:

Thank you all!
To Bob: I have had Otis since June. He was a foster with a friend of mine for a year. Before that he was found flying the streets in Fl.

welcome to the forum - sounds like he must have escaped from somewhere then.  Looks like he has found a loving home though with you.  I look forward to hearing all about him x  Otis is a great name by the way x

Here is a quick story on Otis.
He was found by an elderly woman flying the streets near central Florida.
(This is according to the woman I got him from)
Her granddaughter went and got the neighbor to help catch him.
They had him for a little while a few months or so... he got out of the cage they had him in, chased them through the house, onto of the bed. :haha:
Really? This doesn't sound right, but that's what she said.
The next person to get him was my friend, the local bird groomer. The elderly woman called her and said get him out of here he's a bully. Or something to that effect.
So my friend the bird groomer, has him for about a year. in the mean time she has ended up with 30 birds and was trying to place some, Otis, being one of them.
I was at a local bird expo and ran into her at her grooming table, she had a double yellow she had brought for someone else, (Who never showed) and Otis.
I have always wanted a grey. I really wanted a Congo, but now I am partial to Timneh. I like the size and the coloring. Granted, they don't have the bright red tail feathers, but that dark maroon is pretty cool. I think he looks like he's wearing a suit, and he really is a penguin, in disguise.
So Otis, as he calls himself, came home with us that day. :hiya We bought him a brand new cage at the expo that day, brought it home. Cleaned and disinfected the cage and put him in quarantine, (the master bedroom).
He was in a little bird cage, as the travel cage.
We get this little guy, in new surroundings, new noises, he has been at an expo all day, he's tired and cranky and hungry.
How to get him out of the cage.... :panic:
Don't have a clue if he steps up...if he is stick trained nothing. She just said, I haven't really had time to spend with him. He's closet talker, talks, but not while you are in the room.
What to do... My partner hands me a perch, oh no, he's panicking. So, she bites the bullet and stick her arm in, CHOMP!!!! Great,(sigh).
We dismantled the little cage he was in and as soon as the top came off he took flight. Landed... I ended up toweling him, (I didn't want to do that) and putting him in the cage. We left the room as soon as we saw he was ok. Let him just veg for a couple of hours; get some food, water, relax.
The next morning, he's covered up, we hear, "Good Morning, want a cracker?"
Then he would talk while we were out of the room. Then started whistling to the other birds in the house, call and response.
The next morning, he's covered, we here, Good Morning, Lord o' mercy, you want a cracker?" OMG
ok, so weeks went on, he's been moved into the main part of the house. This boy has one heck of a vocabulary, talks while you are in the room, answers questions with funny remarks, if the water in the sink is on, he says, "Water, want some water." I mean he is really intelligent.
He is the class clown. And I know he loves me, and I love him!
My Blue & Gold will always be my number one girl, he's my forever boy.
The Senegal, SweetPea, is my partners bird. She is a mess, I love her too!!!!
This is my flock. I love them all, with all my heart! :ty
