Does my Grey think I'm Mum??
« on: June 17, 2016, 08:23:46 AM »

Kiwi ignores nuts of all kinds , except Almonds. But if I'm eating Pecans, Brazils etc she will fly (well flap , scrabble and climb would be more accurate lol !) to me and stick her beak in my mouth to get the chewed nuts!!
She is so quick that by the time I realise her intention its too late, I have now stopped eating nuts when she is out.

yep she wants feeding, i have a cockatiel who is 6 years old and still tries to dive into my mouth if i'm eating, in fact most of my birds think if i'm eating they want some!

Just do as you're doing and don't eat in front of her. Saliva has all kinds of bacteria that can make them very ill.

That was going to be my next question, is my saliva harmful.......

My previous Grey in all the 26 years we had her always wanted what we had but off our plates never from our mouths!!

Thank you,

I'll make sure she's in her cage or on her stand whenever we're eating in future

It really is about positive reinforcement. Whilst not perfect we still get the attempted push in, think like a flock own your space. I actually get pushed around the least. Just encompasse your area with you arms and slowly expand, you shouldn't need to touch them. They'll slowly move back but remember slowly. Big thing is to reward them for the behaviour you want. My 2 sit on my knee less than a foot from my plate, they know the easiest way to get it is by being good on my knee.

As for diving in the mouth Willow is a nightmare he wants your teeth.
