Getting rid of the phone!
« on: February 07, 2016, 08:40:15 PM »

Hi,
I have a 23 year old grey called jack. I've had him for 2 years now and before that he belonged to my grandad. He has settled in well and although sometimes his hormones get the better off him, he's quite affectionate  :rose:
The one problem I have is the equivalent of screaming but instead its a telephone! Its actually the telephone my grandparents had. If they left the room he would ring and they would come back in thinking it was the phone. He had been doing this for years now and I have no idea where to start to break that habit.
The last few weeks it's got terrible  :baseballbat:  He even does it when I'm in the room now.  I'm worried my neighbours are going to realise I'm not that popular to be having people ringing me all day everyday
Any advice is gratefully received  :ty

I'm afraid (depending on how you look at it) this might be one of those habits you can't break, if Jack has done this for years, he obviously enjoyed your grandparents running into the room, bless him  :cheekkiss:

Is he loud with it? Wonder if he heard a mobile he would copy that after a while? Really don't know what else to suggest, if he's not so loud with it, and just smile at him and think fondly of your grandparents :)

Oh it's loud lol. My neighbours haven't said anything but I'm worried they will and then they'll call the council as a noise disturbance.
He's just all of a sudden started doing it literally all day everyday x

Ignore him when he's doing the sound and reward him when he's not, however briefly, make a big deal lots of 'good boys' etc. He should start to work it out.

You could also try and see if there's a more acceptable sound that he likes and he may stop doing the annoying one.

Do you leave a radio on when you're not around? I have a radio on constantly when i'm out at work, gives them a bit of company and he might not be as bad.

Yeh he always has the radio on when I'm not alot and generally when i am about either the tv or the radio is on.
My partner left a few weeks ago could this have triggered jack to do it more often? I just hate to think that he's upset  :blow:

Oh sorry to hear that Rachael  :cheekkiss:

Possible could be why like he's trying to call him back? I know you wouldn't want to but could you tell him he'll be back soon? He might forget after a while, such a shame as I bet you both miss him :(

Hi Rachel
If it's possible you could leave the room once he rings and enter once he stops
He will soon learn the reverse works
It may take time but be worth it in the end xx

Yeh I think we're both missing him and is one less person for Jack to talk to  :cry2:
It's more of a case of him doing it when I leave the room so at the moment I'm trying to stay out of the room and only respond and come back when he's making other noises
Jack is covered at night and I've noticed he starts to do one ring about 10pm then if I don't get up to him he does another one. As soon as he's covered he's silent lol x
