Itchy tail / down plucking
« on: June 19, 2015, 01:48:03 PM »

Hi,
We have a 4 years old CAG named Diesel and we're very worried about the behavior since he started to pluck his tail  (first the down from the red feathers then the down of the tail) and gaving us very hard times when started to hurt himself (tail side) until he was bleeding.

We went to several vets but they have no experience in CAGs so they assumed this or that.

Right now he's doing it for three months and we're desperate since he wants to stay on my shoulder all the time and to sleep on my head/shoulder also.

We managed to treat his wounds with aloe vera gel and some antimicotic cream (vets told us to) then to bathe him to calm him down. After every bath he stayed calm from 30 minutes to 3-4 hours.

When he is in crisis he's agressively plucking and hitting his tail with his feet. Then flies from place to place screaming.

Please let us know if this could be hormonal/microbial/behavioral/something else maybe.

Thank you so much.

It is difficult to say, it could be hormones, stress, habit, diet, there are so many scenarios. Do you have an avian vet you can go to?

Can you give us more information?

To me this bird needs checking out by a proper avian vet .
Like you years ago  we went to a number of normal vets, but none of it was really any help till I found a good avian vet.
Perhaps if you told us what area you live in it may be a help.
Like most of us on here you may have to travel to see one, but its well worth it . They are dealing with this sort of thing just about every day .
Full marks for using the Aloe vera
. We have a hormonal plucker & we use it every day mixed in the spray
There are loads of questions here
What do you feed on ? eg pellets fruit veg etc
Do you know if its deffo a male ?. Is it showing any signs of hormone activity .
eg spinning .clucking regurgitating  putting any toys on its back to stimulate itself

Ok,
His food is mainly fruits (loves apples, carrots) pellets and ocasionally white/striped seeds (he loves them and we use them as big reward).

As for hormons, he is VERY attached to me (male) as he is trying to regurgitate almost every time I keep playing with him more than a minute.

But I insist, it all started suddenly and the evolution was very rapid from nervous flying/ plucking to hurting himself (4 days).

I live in Romania and I found a vet from Holland that I will ask to look at vids/pics and see what he will tell us to do.... We're desperate.

Well it could certainly be hormones but when you say he started being nervous it makes me wonder if something has changed in his environment, has anyone changed their appearance, even in a slight way? Have you introduced something into the home or moved anything? They are so sensitive to change it could be something as simple as that

Try the falconry guys I can't speak Romanian, wouldn't be surprised if they could at least point you in the direction of a vet that at least has an interest http://asociatiaperegrinus.ro/

I've got more but you really could do with ruling out medical problems first. I'll type another response later.
