Making pellets from newspaper ?
« on: November 03, 2015, 05:37:43 PM »

Hello, I'm new to this forum, and have taken on a new Grey - about 5 - 6 yrs old, not looked after properly by the old owner, and as I have had two Grey parrots previously, I agreed to "get back in the water". Fairly certain she is a "she", now becoming affectionate that she has proper attention, a bigger cage, better diet, new quills and feathers coming back in some of her bald areas. One behavior I have not seen before - she goes down to her cage bottom - which I line with sheets of fresh newspaper each morning, rips up the paper (no surprises there), but often I will find she has chewed up the paper, masticated it, and made little pellets, that she leaves on the floor - can be up to 30 little pellets or so.
Any ideas out there from experienced owners ?
Many thanks,
Peter

Hickory balls paper... purely guessing and wildly... shreddable material is instinctive, guessing nesting material. As for balling think it's playing with it. I guess again repetitive is easy comparing to natural preening behaviour.

I had to give Hickory a bookshelf, she balls some but generally trashes most. As for her interest I'm finding for me it's relevant to time of year.

Hi Peter
My peach does it with the paper roll shredding toy too
I use to watch her carefully to make sure she was spitting it out
Do you not use a grill in the cage bottom?
One of my females I have to discourage from any nesting behaviour or she lays eggs xx

Thanks Mandi !
No grill with the cage I inherited, so will have to have one made. She loves chucking her food about, then goes to the cage bottom to pick and choose, so will have to get the grill spacing correct.
No eggs yet !
