Why does our African not want to get off my finger??
« on: July 20, 2015, 11:30:37 AM »

We have a 27 year old African Gray. She has always bonded with my husband but also likes me.
If I hold her , which she wants me to a lot, she won't get off my finger to put her in the cage without biting me!!
Also, she will climb off her cage and if I'm busy at my desk and don't know she is down, she will come up and bite my toes or ankle!
Also she will b outside my shower door if I'm in the shower!!!
Does anyone have any answers to as to why she does this please?

Great Photo   I would say that she loves you and just wants to be near/on you, I would suspect that the biting is a good way to get your attention, she maybe just hasn't learnt that biting is not the desired way to get a fuss made of her.
Some people will say to ignore the biting, personally whenever Ozzy got a bit over excited and nipped, I just said NO or OW in a firm voice, he has learnt now and is very gentle.    Of course, now he says OW quite a lot too

Awww shes lovely, is Yoda her name?

Some if not most greys have a thing for toes, don't know why but we have to watch our feet if jasper is on the floor

Could you try letting her step on your arm or on a cushion to go in her cage, to save your fingers?

My husband occasionally puts her on our bed because she loves to go under the pillows, if I come near the bed she attacks me, even flew onto my back!!
The only way I can get her into the cage is if I put millet inside but I fear she will catch onto me!!!

Try not to show so much fear if she doesn't step up, Yoda does sound a bit spoiled bless her, little madam

Sounds like she's made your bed her territory, think you'll have to win it back lol

Thx Jules! All good advise and yes she is very spoiled! She will step up on my finger, she just won't get off my finger without biting me!!
I don't understand that part!!
My husband was holding her like a baby this morning! Not too spoiled, huh?

Mine sometimes bites me because she doesn't want to step down and wants to stay on me. I find holding a piece of almond infront of her face works! Sometimes she grabs it with her beak but I don't let go of it until she steps back off my hand and onto her perch. Try that with something she realy likes like a sunflower seed or a piece of a nut

Lynn
Is your African bonded with you?
Ours bonds with my husband, not me, so it puzzles me that she doesn't want to get off my finger!

Cunning little devils aren't they! Lol

Yes one is bonded to me but she can give a damn good bite though if she doesn't get her own way! My other one Bobby only likes my other half she always has done, she's got better over the years but she will not allow me to handle her with my bare hands but happily steps onto a towel so we manage quite well.
