It is the square not the square root. Does that help?

For the square multiply the number by itself. Eg 4x4 = 16 so the square pf 4 is 16

The square root is what two numbers, which are the same,  multiplied together to give that number so root of 100 is 10 because 10x10 =100. Not all numbers have whole number roots and the roots need to be worked out with a calculator and 12 would be one of those
