Liz and Rachel, I think in both cases your problems are the differences between verbs and nouns.
Practice is a noun and practise is the verb it stems from (unless your are American).
Past is a noun, and passed is a past tense of to pass (apologies for the extra past...it was the only way I could explain it

I'm ashamed I don't know this stuff, I should I have an A at O level (showing my age) but those are the only 2 words I think that flumox me ( is flummox a word) LOL ( verb or noun)

I only got a C at O level (yep, same era), but my father is a walking encyclopedia and drilled into me the importance of grammar and spelling at a very early age. To be honest, it only really comes in handy when dealing with computers (as Rick would no doubt testify, put a comma in the wrong place in a script and it will go into meltdown).

I had the 2 different English teachers at school, the first was absent for most of the 1st year and 1/2 then was sacked. The second was just about to retire. They just don't seem to have been very competent, I really feel that I missed out on a lot of grammer etc and it was never my strongest subject. It's part of why incompetent teachers annoy me so much now. Children only have one shot and if they don't make it there can be huge problems for them further down the line.

That's a vey strange thing though Liz and PaPaJo - I am an excellent proof reader cos when someone else has used the wrong who's/whose or past/passed I spot it immediately, I just don't know which one to use when I have to write it!!!
What's all that about then?

Its always easier to see mistakes when you find something unexpected, you read things other people have done without prior knowledge. Re-reading your own material is more difficult to spot mistakes, because you know what it says already.
Teachers were a sore point for me too. As my name is Alasdair, I don't necessarily expect people to know how to spell it instantly, but as a teacher should be setting examples it put me off when I brought home a school report with 10 different spellings of my name, none was correct

Yeah. I always make a big effort to learn how pupils spell their names. Really gives the wrong impression if you spell it wrong
