Any untreated rope. Hemp or sisal are best. Treated wood (eg varnish) should be avoided and there are some woods that are not parrot safe but Pine is good and they should have that in B and Q

Just scrub all branches well, spray with F10 and leave to dry

Hello everyone,

We all know how expensive it is to buy a parrot playgym / Playstand / Java tree. So I thought I would make my very own (CHEAP)

Here is how I Did it.

THE PLAYGYM

STEP 1

First I got 2 shelves from an old bookshelf.
I fixed them together with FIXING BLOCKS. Using small zinc free screws.

STEP 2

I then cut up some Planed edge timber (which I already had) but Its cheap to buy.

STEP 3

I then screwed in into the shelf edge. (using small zinc free screws) if you use a screw thats long the timber will crack.

STEP 4

I then cut some squared edge timber for legs (x4) I made mine aprox 10 inchs high, but you could go bigger.

STEP 5

I then fixed these under the base using fixing blocks and small zinc free screws.

PUT TO ONE SIDE FOR NOW

Now to make they GYM parts

STEP 6

I used dowel (cheap to buy)

I cut 3 pieces the same size and fixed together to make an n like shape but with an overhanging bar at the top on each side.
(using small zinc free screws)see picture below.

I then wrapped rope round the dowel for the parrot to grip better with its feet. I hung 2 toys from
this for the parrot to play with.(I only wrapped the legs and the 2 top ends with string for a better look.
(Threading some plastic beads up one leg)

Then screwed it using sligtly bigger but not long zinc free screws to a base made from planed edge timber, which I cut the ends in angles to give it a nicer look
(using a mitre saw)

STEP 7

I then cut 2 piecess of the edge timber and fixed a piece of dowel at the top. (using small zinc free screws) I then used 4 small
stainless steel hooks (like tie back hooks but much smaller)and screwed them into the top bar (underneath) and then wrapped
string round the top bar and top part of the legs. (threading plastic beads for a bit of variety)
I hung a ladder that I bought (availabe in pet shops) in the middle (through the hooks). I then hung 2 toys
from the other hooks. 1 babble ball that I bought and 1 toy I made with plastic beads and bits of cut up cardboard.

I then screwed 2 plastic bowls from my cupboard onto the top for food and water bowls. I put 2 other plastic bowls (snackbox size, for lunch box to hold fruit) into the 2
bowls Id just screwed in so the parrot can not get to the screw. (do not glue into place, as you wouldnt be able to take them out and wash them)

STEP 8

I then cut up some more dowel, 1 tall piece and a few smaller pieces. I fixed the small ones to the larger one in different
places, using small zinc free screws.

I then attached the whole thing to a small piece of planed edge timer using a slightly larger but not long zinc free screw.

I then wrapped the small branches in rope (again so the parrots feet will be comfortale and to hide the screws.)

I then got some rope and wound it round the main stem threading plastic beads on it as I went up the pole.

STEP 9

I then cheated and bought a small java branch.

STEP 10

I placed all items on the table that I put aside and then I marked out little crosses where I wanted the items to be placed.

STEP 11

I then drilled holes (where I marked the crosses) and used longer zinc free screws to fix the gym pieces to the base. The java branch needed a huge hole
due to having a huge screw fixed to its bottom. I then used the nut to tighten underneath the table.

This playgym cost me about 22.50 which is cheaper than the ones you can buy online.

HEY PRESTO YOU HAVE YOUR VERY OWN PLAYGYM

NOW FOR THE JAVA TREE

How to make your very own Java tree

I used an old bedside table top. (again you can use any wood you have lying around)

Cut up some more planed edge timber and screwed it to bedside table top edge using some small zinc free screws.

Again I used some square edge timber to make some legs - 10 inches high again and fixed to base (underneath) with fixing blocks. and small zinc free screws.

PUT ASIDE

Buy 1 or 2 java branches from local petshop, ebay or online

markout with a cross where you want them to go and drill holes. You will need to drill large holes

Screw in java branches and tighten with nut from underneath.

This Java Tree cost me about 34.00 which is miles better than the 200+ the shops charge.

AND HEY PRESTO YOU HAVE YOUR VERY OWN JAVA TREE

I hope you enjoyed reading this and will add more items when I make them.
Thanks
Michelle
