Bald patch..
« on: November 01, 2013, 06:22:06 PM »

Afternoon guys and girls..

Birdy-Man has started to get a small bald patch on the top of his head.

The skin looks dry underneith and I'm not 100% sure but looks like more than one feather is missing?

Any advice please?

Thanks

Jasper once had a bald spot on her head through scratching, there was just one feather missing. F10 in her shower water helped alot and encouraged new feather growth :)

Could be due to moulting, that would make him feel itchy and he will scratch the area as a new feather would be coming through

I'm sure it's getting worse, there obviously only tiny feathers on the head and it looks a bigger area than one feather?

I have noticed since he got out (escaped and he was out in the wild for a day!) he has been scratching a fair bit?

Worth a vet checkup? (Closest avian vet is 45 mins away so lots of stress for him)

Rub a tiny bit in as it will sooth it x

That's good news, I'm going to take him to the vets just for a general checkup anyway for piece of mind.

No mites, he is out with us most of the evening so sure we would have noticed by now too.

Thanks a lot guys

Could he have bumped his head on anything, my Yvie had a little patch like that and i think she'd flown and caught herself on something, they grew back fine. But as others have said i don't think you need to worry.

I have one that clings to her cage like exactly like that (but she also grabs a wing and chews it)! It wouldn't surprise me if that's how the bald patch happened....

Aww she probably not used to the carrier and travelling yet. Next time I'd put a towel on the bottom to stop her sliding about so much  :cheekkiss:

good to hear there's nothing seriously wrong x

Sorry I have only just replied, the vets (local vets I use for other animals) said doesn't look anything bad but monitor it and if it changes take him to the specialist (over an hour away!)

I'm sure it's getting worse. It looks dry to me?

Hi, sorry just noticed there is a blanket in his carrier in the last pics x

the patch does look bigger but not dry to me, did you try the aloe vera gel? He's a bit too young to be molting just yet bless him but is there a toy he is rubbing his head on or perch? It might be worth making that trip to s specialist just for peace of mind :)

There is a toy with a metal bell he stand under and plays with that's constantly hitting him but not hard and he only does it when he is playing, not like it rubs on his head all day? He has to go to his "play  perch" to get to it and he doesn't sleep etc there?

It's quite a noticable bald patch that isn't it, it could be from the bell if like you say he puts his head in it and plays with it regularly. the feathers at the back of his head look a little frayed too.
You know that clinging on backwards thing he was doing in his travel cage? does he do that when he is in his normal cage too?
