Berties first bath!
« on: October 24, 2013, 11:33:16 AM »

Well finally plucked up the courage to spray Bert. Was a bit worried how he would react incase he hadn't been sprayed before. He was a bit shaky but then when i was finshed he went straight to his water bowl and dived into it =) Guess it's safe to say his water phobia has been cured!

All he needs is for his feathers to grow back and he'll be great!
Thanks for everyone who offered their advice on Bert and his plucking.. Hopefully those days will soon be behind him and he will be even more comfortable in his new forever home .

Aww well done bert  One of mine dives in her water dish for a bath after she's been sprayed they are funny aren't they. Mine will only bath in cold water if I put luke warm water in her bowl she wont get in it! Crazy ;)

Well i aren't sure about that yet as it was his first bath with us.. But i had just freshly changed his water after he ripped his sweetie stick to bits over his bowl  So i'll have to look out to see whether he'll bath in warm water. Was funny how i made sure it was warm water i sprayed him with to keep him warm and he seemed to prefer the cold water anyway. We don't have the warmest of houses and i'm so paranoid about him getting cold due to his lack of feathers.
He does seem to be a lot happier now that he's clean though and his feathers have a nice shiny glow =) Just destroyed another toy lol.. 3rd one in one day!!
Hoping the toys online are better suited to his shredding habits.
He is hilarious.. Only had him since saturday and he is so cuddly already and never shuts up haha.

good to hear bert love his showers after all. jasper is the same with her bowls and will splash about at the same time as i spray her, it's quite funny to watch

if you spray bert as early in the day as you can, this will give him time to dry out thoroughly. on cold days i must make sure the doors are shut so the room is nice and warm and not draughty

I usually bath him around lunchtime with the fire lit and the door open. That way he stays warm without getting too warm.. If that makes sense.
He's started to fight back though.. Don't think he's ever had a bath in his life looking at how he reacts. He shakes alot even though it's been a few weeks and he's stopped diving into his water bowl, I just assumed that he felt clean enough after i sprayed him as i usually give him a good spray. I think he'll just need patience as it is all new to him and i'm prepared to give him as long as he needs.
He is moulting loads at the moment.. Is this normal? Even his big feathers are coming out without encouragement from him.

Need to think about his christmas presents now =) First christmas with us has to be something special!

Some birds do molt alot throughout the year so it seems quite normal. bert might not want to splash every time maybe just once a week or so like jasper. Or maybe you didn't get the temperature quite right lol. Birds are fussy little things

Hope you find something extra special for bert, he'll love his first Christmas with you  :cheekkiss:
