i personally would take him to vet, as if they bleed they are hard to stop, also bella has long blood vesels and her nails cant go too short. at least for the first time go to vet, however some people on here do it ok,

Two ways to tell Mary,
firstly when on a flat surface the feet should lay flat, if raised because of the nails then they are getting long.
Secondly if your hands/arms are getting cut to ribbons then they are getting long

As whether to do it yourself, depends how confident you are ,maybe best to let the vet do it first time and take it from there

Yep it's normal. There are ways to combat it with perches and toys, but sometimes it just happens. Like us really.

It is normal, natural/sandy/concrete perches help to keep them down.
I don't take them to the vet, I do it myself as I think quite a few do

Don't mind you asking Mary  I clip them, find it much quicker and less stressful to them than filing, I only take a very small bit off each time
But I know others file them or use a dremel, whatever works for you

I file Charlie's nails.......ok, first of all I have to say, I'm not   you will see there is method in my madness..........

When Charlie is in his cage, we play a game called Tickle Toe Toes!  I say in a stupid voice, "tickle toe toes, I'm going to tickle toe toes!" then I catch his toes and play with them, touching all of the toe and the nails, he loves it, he goes upside down and bends his head around, we make it a game.....but........every so often we play the game and I have a nail file/emery board in my hand, so, we tickle toe toes and I file nails....easy peasy, done.  If you do it regularly, it's really only a two minute job.  Of course you have to remember which one you have done because you won't be able to play tickle toe toes for so long as to get them all done at once.

Flint is scared of the nail file, he got his done at the vets when he had his annual check up. Hoping once a year would be enough.

I like the sound of 'Tickle Toe Toes' though - will try this game with Flint! It might turn into 'Finger Off Off' though
