Feather chewing?
« on: May 02, 2018, 03:50:46 PM »

Hello

Iíd like to know if anyone thinks this looks like feather chewing?

We adopted Gandie and the feather on this part of his wing have always looked like this.

Iím assuming heís chewing but Iíve never seen it.
I would say he spends a normal amount of time preening (same as my conures, cockatiels and Senegal) but heís not keen on bathing and hates to be sprayed so we donít do that.

Heís big on destroying things so has boxes, Wood, and various types of toys to keep him busy.

It hasnít got worse in the 8 years weíve had him but I wonder if thereís more I could be doing for him if it is feather chewing.

It looks like a bit of over-preening but it also looks like he could do with a good water spray, if itís not getting any worse though Iíd lean towards needing a bath. Mine hates baths but iíve got a fine mist spray and I just try to give her a spray every so often. Try that.

Also do you have an avian lamp? And what food is he fed?

He really hates the misting but Iíll give it a go.

We have a lamp and heís on Harrisonís high potency course with fruit and veg, occasional seeds and nuts.

Try one spray then praise, then again the next day & increase only as heís comfortable. See how he looks after a week or two :)
