Generally scruffy!
« on: November 21, 2013, 07:38:37 AM »

Hey guys, birdy-man is going down hill.. He looks like he has done a few rounds with the bird equivalent of mike Tyson!

The breeder said it's down to him flapping in his cage (which he does a lot!) this combined with his bald patch on his head is making him look a tight state bless him haha

Any ideas?

Thanks

LOL you lot :)

Its fairly normal for a baby to start to look a bit scruffy especially on the edges of the flight feathers. Gizmo looked just like that. Its caused through rough play just keep your eye on him for chewing them.

So it's him chewing rather than the flapping? I'm really worried about his general behaviour, he constantly bites (not hard but occasionally gets you on a bit that hurts) he has his bald patch, scruffy feathers, smelly poos?

Hmm..

I'm ordering the light for him and now want some plume spray.. Is it worth it?

He's a baby so his feathers will look tatty, especially the tail feathers as he'll play and bash about the cage. Haydes went down to having 1 tail feather left when he was a baby.

The smelly poos is the diet, which you can try and change.

A light will benefit him, but plume spray is a waste of money, water is fine

The bald patch on his head is a concern though especially if it's in a place he cannot reach, he should be tested for PBFD which is Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease to rule it out.

The vets have said it's not worth bringing him in just monitor and if anything changes for the worse take him straight in! Fingers crossed.

I'm going to rub some aloe Vera gel in!

I'm hoping he will stop looking this scruffy soon, he was immaculate when I got him bless him. Lol look at other birds on here and can't help but want him to look like them!

We all want our birds to look the best but it doesnt mean we love them any less,Paxo is about 18 months old now and still has the black marks at the end of her tail,we cant wait for her to moult her tail feathers and for bright orange ones to grow back.

Know what your saying, he has quite a lot of black in his feathers too. Lost one feather so far! don't think that moulted though at 5 months old?

Can see a new layer of shorter feathers growing though!

Bless him haha

Jamie if he's anything like mine she started moulting at about the same time and went on in phases till she was about 14 months! it seemed endless.

Jamie if its bothering you  go to Holland & Barrett & buy a tube of Aloe Vera Gel  ( Bio Active Skin Treatment )make your spray up & add a couple of drops in the spray but just remember every time you use the spray to give it a good shake . We own a plucker whos 26 & a rehome 32 ( who has a bald head )from been over preened & we give em both a light spray  with this mixture every day .
Has regarding smelly poo well :panic:  we have a hen  & when shes  sitting eggs  & she comes off after hours & hours  & poos its terrible :cry2: . If im right , I think Mandi once decribed it as like a sour fruit smell. :panic:
