Need advise
« on: January 06, 2016, 12:31:50 AM »

Dear All,

I just became a first time grey owner in the middle of november.
She was a gift for my birthday. A quite shocking but rather joyful surprise. :)

First she was quite shy but we have quickly became friends. Now she loves to cuddle and she always lays on my shoulders and she seems very happy and acts just as normal as she has to.

But ever since I've got her she have a bald area on her forehead above her beak. I think she must plucked her feather at the breeder, but she did not do this since she is at our home.
And there is a worrying head scratching what she does at least in like every 4-5 minutes... honestly I have no idea why she does that... I have read about vitamin deficiency can cause dry skin but I am afraid she must have some more difficult issue. I am almost sure it is not about moulting because there arent any new feathers growing yet. I have attached below some pictures of her head. Could you please advise me what should be the issue?

Besides this.. I have read your comments about the importance of avian lamp. Could you please help me which type or manufacturer is worth to use?

Thank you in advance,
Adam

Hi and welcome adam
She is such a cutie :baby:
Didn't catch her name sorry

Anyways as for the bald patch
Does she 'chicken scratch' in the corner of her cage?
It's like a scooting motion
My baby dinted her beak doin this and I'm thinkin maybe your baby had rubbed her head the same way ?
Hopefully it will grow back :)
The scratching , do you give her a spray /shower ? They are very dusty birds and really do need one
Do you have her cage near a radiator (can dry skin )
As for the avian lamp are you in the uk ?
As most members use SCARLETTS (link to follow)
She is also a member on this forum and drops by now and again :)
Enjoy your baby :) and if in doubt then a good avian vet will be your answer
Xx

Fully agree with all Mandis said :thumbsup:We have a radiator next to our cage and its been turned off for years for that reason. If you've not done it already you should register your bird with your nearest avian vet in any case as you never know when you need one quick .Scarlett has a range of avian lights from clip on ones to uprights .Please have a look on her website.Spraying your bird is very important especially when the heating is on in the home in winter.
