Put me out my worry..
« on: June 28, 2014, 10:31:17 AM »

Morning everyone. Hope you are all ok?

I think (hope) birdyman is now having his first molt. He is just over a year old (hatch day this month)

He is losing feathers pretty fast. Faster than I would expect if I'm honest. He has lost 12 (that I have kept) in the last few weeks. They don't look damaged to me but rather check with you guys they are from a molt not plucked.

Here are the feathers..

Just a few questions about molting.. Do they fall out once the new ones have grown? Or do they drop out then grow back? Surely that big wing feather will take another year to reach that size if so?

Thanks for your help as always :)

They all look moulted to me, it's quite surprising how many you find so don't worry. A flight feather only takes 6 -8 weeks to fully grow back. There's a really good post on here that explains it... I'll try and find it and bump it for you ;)

Yep all moult feathers, it's quite worrying when it first happens & it's probably going to go on for a while, give him loads of sprays cos it really makes the uncomfortable & grumpy

It is alarming isn't it the amount of feathers that fall out? It used to worry me too. Once the old one has fallen out a new one will grow back pretty quickly, you'll be able to see the pins coming through :)
