Tail Feathers.
« on: July 26, 2010, 10:55:52 AM »

Gonzo plays pretty rough in his cage with his toys and has broke quite a few of his tail feathers, he has also moulted quite a few... Is there anything I can do to make him not play as rough with his toys. I just don't want him breaking his tail feathers.

Oh and will the broken one grown back in like the moulted ones ?

Thomas, I had exactly the same problem with Haydes, but he broke every single tail feather!

The quilles should still be in place, and will moult out as normal  Haydes now has 2 new tail feathers and has 2 more coming through, He still plays rough, but so far hasn't broken his new ones.

I don't think there is much you can do to prevent Gonzo from playing rough, hopefully that is something he will learn

The only thing is to try and place his toys away from the bars of the cage a bit so he doesn't bash them as much but I know what you mean as Echo can be like that too.

It doesn't take long for the tail feathers to grow back.  Bobby only had 3 when we got him (he'd plucked the rest) and that was back in March - now he's got the full set!
