9 1/2 year old bite
« on: February 02, 2013, 11:27:13 PM »

I hand raised my little boy, Zuri. He was friendly with everyone until he turned about 3 years old. At that time he would no longer let me handle him at all. My husband then became his bathing partner and best buddy. I feed him, clean up after him, everything else plus I can touch his feet while he is in his cage. He has a very balanced diet, the very best cage I could find and anything else I have been told to try. My vet said that it was hormonal and  that after a few years he may come back around to me. He saw me as his mother and wouldn't mate with his mom so the other person in the home became more desirable. He hasn't displayed any mating signs with my husband or me. Zuri loves me and speaks in mostly my voice. He has the things to keep his mind busy. He is healthy. I still can't put my body near him. This hurts my feeling since I haven't really handled him in 6 years. Only through his cage. I won't give up though it looks like he has become my husband's little fellow. Zuri and I converse and he loves it when I come close and whisper to him, sing to him ask him questions etc . Everything seems normal . I tried the visualization when we were in a shower situation  about 5 years ago and he attacked me. 2 really bad bites. One on my shoulder and the other on my finger when I removed him from my shoulder. I didn't place him on my shoulder. He flew there and attacked me. I didn't raise my voice, or display any body language to scare him before or during the attack. I handed him back to my husband calmly as possible as the blood ran down my back and hand. I'm honestly scared of him now but still crazy in love with him. I'm just not his person and it seems my husband is. Has anyone else had this happen? I've come to terms with the situation and have resigned myself that I probably will never get the pleasure of really handling him again. I've asked so many experts and my vet about this yet haven't had a satisfactory answer. I wondered if anyone else has had this happen and did their African Grey ever come back to them. I have never done any wrong to him. I love him. It is sad but even if I never can really handle him again I won't let him go without all the affection he will allow me through the cage. He is absolutely gaga over my husband too.

Starla, as heartbreaking as this may sound your not zuri's chosen one
like the vet has said he has seen his 'mate' in your husband
Iv had it happen to me with my Casper , he loved me until he met my hubby n now he loves only him
I now can pick him up and move him to and from his cage but muse a buddy perch to protect m fingers
He also, talks on my voice and so do  of my others
I have only one grey that likes me over anyone else and she talks like my hubby (see the pattern)
I don't know ow true it is but iv read that your grey will talk like their mates partner , as they are competing against them for affection, so Zuri talks like you as your his mates partner
I have one grey no one can handle , that's not a problem as we learn to work round it
They don't stay baby cuddl tame forever and are known to like just one person, just make the best of it and enjoy him :flowers:

That's interesting to see the pattern in voices as I believe my parrot gizmo thinks I am his mate, but yet everyone says how much he sounds like my other half Dave.

Sorry to hear about your situation this is not quiet the same but fingers crossed might be some hope.

Gizmo didn't used to let Dave do as much with him as me, to the point that he would attack and bite him and make him bleed but would never me.  Dave once said I might have to choose either him or the bird as it was that bad.  Obviously he was put in his place, I said it would be him rather than the bird as we chose to have him in our lives.

With time he has become more friendly with him, as I think Dave has put a lot more time into him as he gets home from work before me, letting him out of the cage and teaching him words, songs, sitting him by the computer, playing with him and his favourite toys he can now tip him on his back and tickle him which he couldn't do sometime ago.  Gizmo shouts for his daddy and will say I love you daddy but he won't say I love you mommy.( By the way I am not saying you don't put the time in) this has paid of for my other half although he can be very loving towards him when I'm not there he That's interesting to see the pattern in voices as I believe my parrot thinks I am his mate, but yet everyone says how much he sounds like my other half Dave.

It's funny how they work if Dave walks out of the room gizmo will start playing up for me climbing down the curtains trying to get on lamp but yet he behaves when Dave's there.  He will go straight in his cage if Dave tells him like his master.

Mmmm, this is a funny one. So would Jasper see Tony as her mate? She talks like me but sometimes other people too and often regurgitates for him and tries so hard to get his attention, often to the point of being naughty

When I leave the room Jasper plays up too, and i often have to take her with me to the shower for example, she will wait patiently on the bedroom door :)
