Beak problems need help a.s.a.p please
« on: September 28, 2015, 01:38:50 PM »

Hello I'm looking for help and advice about my parrot Charley.
I've had her 18yrs and never had any health issues with her. In March I noticed a yellow/whitish growth inside her right hand side of her beak. I took her to a vet and at first he thought it could be food but then said it was an abscess or ulcer (maybe candidiasis) and put her on 2 weeks if baytrill. Nothing changed so I took her to another vet and she said it could also be candidia and put her an flucytosine and said if it don't clear she might need to have it removed. When that didn't work I asked for diflucan but she gave me another one I can't remember the name ( still no change!). so I asked for diflucan because i heard it can clear it up in around 5 days and didn't want her to have an operation and haven't got the money for it. I've had her on it for a month now and its not getting better i think its going to the other side of her beak from under her tongue. My problem is I'm I've been on benefits for the past two years now and pdsa won't help. I know i will probably get hounded by you guys saying I'm a bad owner and shouldn't have the parrot if i can't afford to maintain it but i was naive in thinking she was going to get these problems and if I could get the money the vet is saying its going to cost illed have Charley there tomorrow but I'm stuck in a big hole that's getting deeper and I don't know what to do?

Honestly I can't see a way out, not having a clue where you are, can do little but give crazy suggestions. Disclaimer I'm not a professional.

Firstly go to this site read the clinical and application chapters on mycoses and candidia under publications http://avianmedicine.net/

Next this bird had not seen an avian vet. Candidiasis is a secondary both chapters mention fixing husbandry and dietary before. With nothing but speculation I suspect dietary. Sadly birds hide ill health very well. The above chapters also mention possibility of other things. I can't even see where it has been confirmed just speculated! Little I read a culture growth will confirm quickly. Can't see any mention in the above chapters of removal, advice from vet seems bad. I'd get this to an avian vet and get a proper opinion. I suspect first recommendation would be changes to husbandry.

So to the real problem.... Mmm... don't even know where to start. Suppose if it was me after beg, borrow and steal you're left with charity. As pdsa have left you high and dry, all I could suggest would be to approach vet's with the problem with either a pay scheme you both can agree to or an act of charity. Other suggestion would be rehoming/parrot charities(not that it's likely they've got spare cash, but stops 1 bird needing rehoming), explaining your situation. Certainly were I completely without funds and rehoming meant treatment I have to admit their well being would be my priority.
